conflicted about coffee

i'm conflicted about coffee.

i *love* it and am a bit of a coffee snob (buy fresh beans every week, grind them myself before using them in my semi-pro espresso machine). my morning latte makes me happy every day (and ensures that i get enough calcium :)), and at this point i'm not physically addicted...if i don't have one for some reason, there are no adverse effects. so what's the problem, you might ask?

well, i notice that i am upping my coffee consumption little by little. i have an iced coffee almost every afternoon at work now, and sometimes another cup as well. the negative aspects of this include way too much caffeine, late-afternoon "crashing", dehydration, tooth staining, potential tummy problems, etc etc.

but this trend also has two positive effects: it satisfies my craving for a "treat" with almost no calories (splash of milk, no sugar), and really curbs my appetite.

thoughts? anything else i ought to be considering? i am worried that if i lose the coffee, i'll end up sabotaging my weight loss effort or worse...feeling really unsatisfied...

anybody else have a similar problem? or any suggestions?

Decaf

This won't help the tooth staining, but, decaf? Even good, fresh coffee beans come in decaf varieties.

I love my coffee too

I am just about the same way, I love my coffe, and even though it my not be the most healthy, I don't care, I make sure I drink a lot of water, and that I have no sugar with it. I have relized that life is two short to wory about simple things in life like coffee. I have learned how to combat tummy troubles, find several kinds of coffe you like and change offen, this is what I have to do.

have a good day

How about buying a small capuccini cup and drinking it in that. Throw the rest away and drink it black.

Try eating to coat your stomach before you have coffee if you're having stomach problems.

coffee comment

I used to drink 10-12 cups a day. I've weaned myself down to 3-4,sometimes 5.
Know what? Enjoy your coffee. Especially if it curbs your appetite and satisfies a craving. If you don't satisfy a craving, then it's going to totally annihilate your efforts if you deny yourself. A treat now and then is fine if it's chocolate or whatever, but an afternoon coffee is not a big deal.
As for the tooth staining, hey as long as they're yours and you haven't spend mega-bucks trying to look good.....I'm not a materialistic person. I'm just me.
From what I gather from your posting, I wouldn't worry about it.

Coffee snob as well

I am right there with you. The way I look at it there are worse addictions that also suppress the appetite. Water is key here. Just make sure you are drinking at least 8 glasses (maybe even 10), to combat possible dehydration. P.S. Where do you get your beans from?

my beans :)

I primarily get my beans from Oren's daily roast (link below) here in NYC because they're amazing and have a location right near where I work. I *love* their Beowulf blend for espresso and their Viennese roast for lattes and cappucini.

But if you don't live in NY, they do ship their stuff. Other good online places for fresh coffee beans that I like:

http://www.batdorf.com/ (try the dancing goat)

Delicious coffee is *so* satisfying!!!
