Hotdog or Hamburger

Wondering what is the healthier choice if one has to be picked.... probably actually a cheeseburger or a hotdog.

There are a lot of factors involved, including size, type of meat, type of bun, condiments, how it is cooked, etc. Also, depends on what you mean by healthy - low calorie? low fat? low cholesterol? high protein?

Just based on the info you gave, my guess would be the hamburger.

From a pure calorie count, the hotdog will usually win out. But the question becomes what exactly are you eating? And what is more important to you, reducing calorie count, reducing saturated fat, eating more "natural" foods. There are healthier types of hot dogs and hamburgers made with chicken, turkey, tofu, and vegetarian versions.

It's up to you to decide what you want to put into your body.

i would suggest that if you opt for a burger/cheeseburger, buy the meat and grind it yourself, or buy some sirloin and ask the butcher to grind it. most ground beef in commercial supermarkets is obtained by use of a meat-separating-machine (which have been outlawed in the uk since the mid-80's). these machines allow some portions of the spinal cord to be incorporated into the ground beef, thus potentially exposing the consumer to the e-coli bacteria among others.

as an add-on, if you opt for beef hot dogs, the same risk is present.

I'm going on the assumption that you're out somewhere eating from a vendor at a ballgame or beach or streetfair and can't control the ingredients...

A regular hot dog (not a footlong) usually has 140-200 calories. Your average 1/4-lb burger runs 250-300 cals, add 60-80 cals for a slice of American cheese. The buns are about the same, as are condiments...so the dog beats the cheeseburger by about 170 calories.

Reason to have a hamburger and not a cheeseburger, other than the calorie savings: calcium interferes with iron absorption.

If you're making something at home, I am a serious tofu-hater yet I love Boca burgers. I now prefer them to most 'real' burgers. Who'd have thought it...
