home remedy cures for diarrhea?

I looked it up on the web and the results sounded crazy (raw eggs etc - ick). Wondering if anyone has methods they've used with some success.

My home remedy is to reach into the medicine cabinet and pull out some Immodium. I usually keep it in my home.

OP here. Sorry, I should have been clearer. I mean natural (consisting of food and drink) cures.

My mom swears by bananas. I swear by cheese-heavy dishes (usually Italian). I guess I'm basically seconding the 11:00am poster's suggestions.

Dairy always helps. Plain, low-fat (not non-fat) yogurt does wonders.

If your stomach is in a huge amount of pain, simply reduce all food intake and drink plenty of gatorade/something else that will replace your electrolytes. For some reason salty food (think ww saltine crackers) + popsicles (sugar free) always help me too.

Dairy products?? Thats very strange considering they usually tell you to avoid these things if you have bad runs. Most doctors will tell you to do the same diet as you would for children, the BRAT diet, bananas, rice, applesauce and toast, or variations of that. But DAIRY, that usually causes it to get worse in most people.

here is a link with some great info about your problem. fyi: when you experience bouts of diarrhea or frequent vomitting, your body loses vital potassium and magnesium. i think the bananas suggestions are aimed more at replenishing your body than actually halting the problem. beans, grains, nuts and fish have the highest contents of magnesium. hang in there!

OP here - thanks everyone! I called my mom in the AM and she suggested mixing plain yogurt + white rice, which I did and it seemed to help. Also indulged in bananas, once the worst seemed to be over. Thanks for explaining about the electrolytes reasoning for that: you saved me a difficult, fevered, trip to the store to buy gatorade!

Regarding dairy, I suspect that for some (those who are lactose intolerent or allergic in some way) it does make it worse or even causes the problem. But otherwise, it is meant to be binding. At least, according to mom!

ginger soothes the stomach so raw ginger, candied ginger, gingerale, etc...

i guess it depends on what made you sick in the first place.

The BRAT or ABC diets

Bananas
Rice
Apples/Applesauce
Toast
Cereal
Cheese
All are naturally bulking foods which will help get rid of diahrrea. Also avoid juice like Apple, avoid most fruits like Pears and Prunes cause these will help loosen stools.

Dairy in general is bad whether you are lactose intollerant or not it is very hard to digest and will not aid in curing diahrea... with that said the exception is yogurt.

Yogust has active bacteria cultures which replenish aid in digestion which WILL help cure diahrea even though it is a diary product.

Cure Diarrhea

I had diarrhea off and on for four months. I tried lots of things but nothing solved the problem. Then I thought to myself, “If I’m having a problem with loose stools, maybe I should eat something that is constipating”. I did a Google search on constipating foods and saw that Swiss cheese is thought to be constipating. So I started melting Swiss cheese in with my basmati rice every day and that solved the problem. I put a little salt on it, and it is delicious. I’ve basically been diarrhea-free now for three months.

If you have symptoms for more than a couple of days, see a doctor. It could be a sign of something more serious. I'd take the advice of a doctor over the results of a Google search any day.

I think it's best to not eat the foods that are causing your diarrhea in the first place.
