I'm overweight too! I'm 5'1" and 127lbs, and it said for me to get into the "normal" range, I need to drop at least 14lbs! It didn't ask for any measurements besides how much overlap you get when you put your hand around your wrist - didn't ask if I have wide hips - I do, or big boobs - I'm a D-cup! My stomach is flat! Maybe I could lose 5lbs from my hips/thighs, but if I lost much more than that, I'd look sick!

It said I was overweight, too - and I am.
I am 5'2" and 133 lbs. It said I was "marginally overweight" and that my ideal weight range is 118-129.8. I agree with that.
What kind of results did you get?

I'm overweight too according to the calculator. But I know it is true. I've got 21lbs to lose, and I kinda knew that I was in that range (to say the least). *sigh* But that is why I'm here, and frankly I'm glad I'm working on it instead of still sitting around eating cheese and pate with glass after glass of wine.

It told me I was at the low end of my ideal body weight (154 for 5'8", medium frame.) It said my ideal range is 154-164 lbs. I know this wasn't what you intended when you started this thread but I just have to say thanks because I've been feeling a little down and this made me feel better this morning!

okay - well all these results sound TOTALLY random!! This may be a problem with the website's calculator rather than Dr. Koop himself - or maybe not. I don't know.
Who cares. Deep down - everyone knows if they're overweight or not. If you really have to ask, you probably aren't. Or, you're so close, you only need to make minor adjustments.

Actually, I kind of disagree with that; your frame (bone size, which you can tell by wrapping your fingers around your wrist) has a lot to do with your body type. My ideal weight is 145, and I know I would look pretty thin at that weight, but I have a big frame, big bones. I have friends who are the same height but have smaller bone structure and they wear a couple of sizes smaller than I do but we look almost the same size.

Okay, I am 5'1", 126lbs, and when I wrap my fingers around my wrist, my thumb and middle finger overlap by maybe a centimeter. I wear a D-cup bra and usually a "medium" top (t-shirt, etc.) but wear about a size 10 buttondown shirt, b/c anything smaller will pull apart at the boobs, though a much smaller size would fit the rest of me. I wear about a size 6 pants - womens fit better than juniors because I'm curvy. I have quite a bit of muscle - when I flex my arms, a "bubble" of muscle pops up on my bicep, not just that long lean extra muscle that most women have. My back is also extremely muscular, as are my legs.
What is my body type? My bones are probably pretty small, but I have a lot of muscle weight!

personally, i would like to be 140-145, but was down to 133 last summer/fall!
i had a lot going on though - don't know if that was a good, healthy weight for me at the time:( dr. koop says that weight at my height is "underweight", but damn, i was smokin'!

supposedly I need to drop 6 pounds off of my 112. I may personally think that but I dont think any doctor would find in necessary. anyways musle ways more than fat. Everyone needs to go to ediets.com and get a free profile because they'll give you a much more realistic answer:)

These calculators are too generalized.
If you are muscular, you are going to weigh more. A professional, thin-as-a-rail ballet dancer or skater would be carrying a significant amount of weight in muscle.
Also, people distribute fat differently on their body. Some people it is really noticeable when they are 10 lbs overweight, other people not.
I think measurements, while a pain, are a more accurate gauge.

I posted before - the 4th post down - and at 5'1", with a small frame, it told me that the upper end of ideal is 112 lbs!
When I originally posted, I was 127 lbs. Now I am 121. At 127, I thought 5lbs was the most I could lose. Now, 6lbs down, I look good, but I could see losing another 3-5 lbs or so. I'm certainly healthy; this is just for vanity. But even then, I wouldn't be what Dr. Koop calls "healthy." Honestly, I just wouldn't worry about this Dr. Koop!

Well, I always thought I was more medium frame, but just barely medium frame. However, my thumb and major finger barely overlap, so I could be 7 pounds overweight. I don't always trust these sorts of websites. They cannot actually see us. I would say one's own doctor would be more of an expert.

I'm Ideal ? No Way !
well I spotted myself a 1/4" and said I was 5' 9", 175 lbs. Dr. Koop said "Congratulations! Your weight is ideal! " However, every other site I've looked at plus the evidence of my own eyes, says I'm overweight - by at least 20 lbs.
The suggested wieghts vary a lot by frame size - for my height:
150 - 165 lbs. (68 - 75 kg.) for a small frame
160 - 176 lbs. (73 - 80 kg). for a medium frame
170 - 187 lbs. (77 - 85 kg.) for a large frame.
but the descriptions of frame size are incredibly vague. No one who's ever seen me would say I'm small framed, yet by this site I'm on the edge between small and medium. And I know I have disproportionately small hands (it's a fun party trick) and disproportionately broad shoulders - so how should I adjust for that?
Bottom line: don't sweat it. Go with what your eyes and your doctor tell you. I like the idea of adjusting ideal weight by frame size, but Dr. Koop needs to come up with a much more precise defininition before I trust his numbers.

It said it was based on BMI.
And we ALL know how inaccurate the BMI can be. This calculator attempts to take frame into size but any woman can tell you that her frame is not just limited to her bone size.
That being said, it told me I was marginally overweight and I am so it worked okay for me.

It makes no sense. It's telling me I am UNDERweight (I am about 118 and 5'5"). I certainly do not look underweight at all - I thought I was at a good weight for my height and frame (which is small according to their little test, but I still think I have more of a medium frame).

I am unaware of know who Dr. Koop is, but I know in the medical field they have a rule of thumb so to speak. I have consulted on many cases and what is said for women is at 5 feet tall you should be about 105 and for every additional inch 5 pounds should be added. This does somewhat take into consideration frame as the known world of skeletal structure would be in a range of about 5 - 10 pounds from this. This is a weight you are most likely to be medically healthy at.

Dr Koop was the Surgeon General in the Reagan administration.
I did his calculation and it said I was overweight. I am 5'2/158 lbs. I do 30 min of cardio 4 times a week with spirts beyond 85% of my target heart rate. I have been weight training for years, including bench pressing more than half my body weight, quite muscular but also fluctuating body fat, thanks to genetics and hormones. His calculation is too rigid. It does not take muscle weight into consideration. After years of training and frustration with conventional measurements, I have given up on the numbers. I look at the numbers of cholesterol, blood pressure, etc for confirmation I'm doing well.

Beware what they're using to determine body frame. My fingers overlap when encircling my wrist. Am I small framed? By no stretch of the imagination. I have long fingers! Don't let one calulator get you down. There are countless versions on the internet. Some getting praise one day and debunked the next. Best is to discuss this with a physician you trust.

Well I have to disagree. It says I'm underweight. I'm 5'8 144 and would like to get to 135. According to BMI this is still a healthy weight for my height but according to this calculator I need to gain 10lbs!!!
It says I should be between 154 and 169.4 but when I calculate my BMI I need to be at least 164 to have a healthy BMI so at least for me this is way high... not low.

dr. koop is full of poop. why, after so many posted with comments about how inaccurrate the calcultor is, did people continue to use it, only to echo the same results? silly. it's nice to be able to see on paper that we are healthy, but we've really got to be vigilant when it comes to deciding which information to believe!!

I'm the 9/27/2005, 8:02AM poster, and the 1/18/2006, 3:22pm poster, and a year later, I've lost another 3lbs, so now I'm only 6lbs above "ideal" by Dr. Koop. Now, I definitely think I'm healthy, but, when I was 15 lbs above his "ideal" range, I thought I couldn't possibly lose more than 5lbs without being too thin. Now that I've lost 9lbs, I think I could definitely use to lose 6lbs more.
Although I disagree with Dr. Koop on his measurement of "ideal," it does make me wonder if we look at ourselves and either over- or underestimate how much we need to lose/gain, because we really don't know what we will look like at different specific weights, or how healthy we will feel. Just a thought!

It seems realistic!
That calculator is the only place that's given me a "realistic" goal weight (i.e. where I naturally fell for most of my life)... and it's 145, so we're not talking like majorly big. I kind of like it, even though my goal is less than 145.. .that seems attainable since I've been there before.

I always thought I was average but apparently not. I am a 16yr old 5,4 112ib girl and its verdicy was underweight. It says I should weigh between 126 and 136ibs. I geuss its good if its true because I want to be a Horse Jockey, I am at the moment trying to get down to 98ibs so I will be small enough to ride. To be honest I thought I was fat lol. What does anyone else think?

To the 16-year-old, don't take this the wrong way, but Dr. Koop's calculator applies best to full-grown women. While you may be done growing taller, you likely haven't completely finished going through puberty and filling out. 5'4" and 112lbs is very thin for an adult, but though it's thin for anyone, it's probably not "too thin" for a 16-year-old. But, before you try and get down to 98lbs, even if being a jockey is your goal, you should discuss that with your doctor. It may not be healthy for you to lose that much weight. Depending on your body composition, you could become so skinny that you stop menstruating or stunt any potential future growth. When your body stops doing what it's supposed to be doing (i.e. menstruating or growing), it's telling you that something is wrong, and it can't function properly. At 5'4", you may just be too tall to healthily weigh little enough to be a jockey. I'm 5'1", and I'm taller than most jockeys!

ya i'm a big girl........who am i kiding i'm a HUGE GIRL! i have to use a wheel chair to get around and i'm 13! i'm morbidly obese at 4' 9" i weight almost 400lbs (392 to be exact) i can't fit in desks at school so they ordered a desk for "my size" ppl i want to be thin but i don't want to stop eating i eat durein class i eat three lunches a day at school for dinner i eat 4 double cheese burgers 2 large fries and 3 blizzards..........i luv to eat it's my live and i like it my friends say i'm fat and my parents always say no more burgers u had four already and i say i don't care I WANT MORE then i start screaming and they ALWAYS give me as MUCH AS I WANT i luv them!! so ya i'm fat and i no i'll never have SEX EVER but that's ok cuz i luv to eat and i no i'm healthy in my own way

At 5'4", small framed, and 120lbs, it says I'm at my ideal weight, which I guess seems fine. It doesn't take into account fat vs. muscle though, so someone with a lot of 'flab' may weigh the same as someone with more muscle, but will appear bigger. (For the record I have some muscle and a little bit of flab too, but maybe they cancel eachother out, lol).

I'm 5'8, 125 pounds of mostly lean weight, and the calculator says my 'Ideal weight range is 144 - 158.4 lbs. (65.5 - 72 kg.). You are underweight. '. Oh, forget it. I feel to heavy for myself at 130, and he's suggesting me to gain another 33 pounds? That's crap. Also, my BMI is at a healthy 20.

I supposedly have a small frame, but I am leaning towards medium due to the simple fact that my fingers are extremely long. I'm 6'0", 185 lbs, I am on the slender side, what you would call a "Pirate's dream" with the "Sunken chest"... Okay... okay, they're not THAT small, but could use to be bigger... anyways, If I go by what the small frame says, I am on the verge of being overweight. If by the medium frame, I am right in the middle. Every body is different, and so these things cannot be completely/nearly accurate. I chose to use my own opinion in this instance. I am not even going to go by my dr's opinion. According to her, I'm anorexic while other BMI's online tell me I'm obese... go figure!

I did that as well and it says I'm overweight by A LOT! I know I am overweight some, but it was saying my ideal weight was 106-116lbs. I would be WAY too skinny!!!!

The Problem Is BMI
The calculator isn't broken -- it's just not particularly accurate.
The issue is the formula that it's using -- which is Body Mass Index. BMI is notoriously inaccurate for people who have a high-proportion of muscle on their frames. It will typically overstate your "fatness" because the calculation is based only on height and weight, and not lean body mass. It will also be fairly inaccurate for the elderly also, because they tend to have lean tissue than the average adult. So in the case of older people, it may actually under-estimate body fat.
I do have to at least give them credit for asking a "build" question about your frame size, which at least adjusts a bit for body type. My numbers were off as well, still, but that's because I'm between 10-12 percent body fat most of the time, and the standard BMI calculation is based on a sedentary adult with "average" lean body mass. That's probably not be, or many of the people on this site that weight train regularly.
This calc really underscores why scale weight is a terrible indicator of body composition. You are almost always better using something like calipers to get accurate body comps.

it said I was a little overweight, but that I only need to lose ~9 lbs.
I know I need to lose more than that to be healthy and in my ideal weight range according to LA Fitness when I joined and my past experience with weight. I used to weigh 135 and I was still a little chunky!

I did not expect this at all actually. I am 19 years old and in my own opinion, I could lose maybe another 7 pounds or so. My doctor says I am normal weight, other BMI calculators say I am overweight, and this one seems to say I am at my ideal weight. But whats different is that when I went to my doctors, I weighed 6 pounds more. So this is making everything real difficult to understand.

At this thread began over 3 years ago my guess would be that the calculator was re-calibrated based on new findings. This site is super slow though and there are many more reliable, less slow sites out there that I prefer to use.
