Sweating at the gym

I almost never go to the gym anymore - I'm a relatively fit 22-yr old girl and I sweat way too much, even though I drink lots of water - like so much that my shirt will get all sweaty within the 1st 10 minutes of exercise! Sometimes there are even puddles of sweat on the floor where I'm using the exercise bike. And I'll look at the other girls and a lot of guys too and they'll be running for a half hour and it looks like they're not sweating at all! Does anyone else have this problem? And if you do, do you still go to the gym?

Sweat is good

I sweat profusely. I, like you , leave puddles under the bike at spin class. This does not bother me at or the instructor all, to me it means that I am pushing my body to it's max, a lot of people that go to the gym don't really push themselves, I am always trying to improve my time or lift more weight, this is why I sweat. If I'm not sweating I'm not working, so if I'm not going to work whats the point of going to the gym.

Sweating is not a problem unless it happens even when you're watching TV. About 2 months after I started seriously working out, my body learned to sweat like a champ. Remember, sweat is about cooling and toxin release, so it's a good thing! Sometimes I even visualize it as melting fat.

I agree with the 1:36 poster. Sweating is healthy. I sweat through every strand of clothing when I work out and have actually received postive comments like "it's great to see someone who is really working." At my gym, I think people recognize it as a sign of a hard workout. And since we are all there to work out and be healthy, it's a positive thing instead and nothing to be ashamed about.

I am proud of my sweat as a symbol of what I am doing.

Couldn't agree more with these posters. I sweat alot at the gym, most other women are on cardio machines reading or chatting with one another. One women even takes calls on her cell phone!! I go in, plug in my MP3 player and go to work. I'm drenched when I finish and I also get positive comments about working hard. Keep it up.

I sweat a ton as well! Don't worry about it... I actually have a minor med issue where I sweat a ton pretty much all the time (i.e.: in "real life" too). Consider it a badge of honor for how much you're accomplishing!

And for those of us who sweat all the time, if you aren't embarrassed about it, it makes that much less for us to be embarrassed about too...

(no one wants to notice your sweat, because no one wants you to notice theirs)
:) There used to be a brand of jeans that had the logo "sweat pretty"... i love it!

Sweat good, very good. Just clean up the equipment when you are finished and I PROMISE, not a single person at the gym will care. As long as you wipe up after yourself. I too sweat like a pig, but who cares!

Well it's good to hear that so many people are actually proud to have this issue! That's a different way of looking at it, I'll have to try. And I think if there was a shirt that said "sweat pretty" on it, I'd wear it to the gym and sweat all over it. :)

I think sweating is fantastic... If I'm not sweating while I work out I feel like I'm not working out as hard as I should be... I know that I'm doing well when I have sweat running down my face and I get done and my clothes are soaked... it's the best feeling! Keep sweating, you're doing awesome!

I read somewhere that 25% of the population are considered "sweaters". These are people who seem to sweat more than others. I am one of those people. I even use perscription deodorant so that I can wear more colors than just white and black!

I also heard that sweating is a sign of good health. The quicker you break a sweat while working out, the better shape you're in!

I, too, am proud of my sweat at the gym. If I'm not sweating, I push myself harder. Be proud of your sweat ladies!

a side note: i think it's really weird when i see people talking on their cell phones while working out.

I love it too. In fact, if I don't sweat, I feel like I'm not working hard enough.

When I see someone at the gym who is sweating, I am pretty impressed. It makes me step up my intensity. I'm definitely not grossed out. The gym is for sweatin'.

Like 3:49, I too don't feel like I'm working hard enough if I'm not sweating profusely! : )
But about taking cell phone calls, aside from the fact that it might be a bit annoying to those around you, they say if you can talk during your workout (or sing along with a song) then you know you're breathing right! : )

sweating is good for the body, it cools you down. the fact that you are able to sweat means that your pores are healthy. you should dehydrate after workout and drink plenty of water evenly spaced during the day.

so do you all really not feel at all self-conscious? it's good to be proud, but I find it hard to believe, especially if it's excessive like mine is. plus i get super red, too, almost purple sometimes, which makes it even worse... I don't know, maybe I'll stick to running outside.

i personally like it when i sweat as i'm proud of a hard workout. you can use a towel, wear athletic clothes in 100% cotton and remember to use a deo if your body odor is strong.

even if you aren't fit right now and sweating alot make you stand out in the gym that's alright soon you will look good if you continue to sweat as much.

you say you get excessive red, maybe you are not breathing correctly or are stressed in the gym, try to focus and relax as much as you can when you workout... you don't have to think of what other think of you.

It's not uncommon for me to lose 3 to 5 lbs from sweating during a competition. I often lose at least 1 or 2 lbs during training all from sweating. When I go to the gym, people know I am their training for some event and respect my ability to put strong efforts into what I do. If I'm now sweating I'm not working hard enough.

RE 10:39

I realize that loosing weight from is sweat is not fat. I did mean to imply this. I am a competitive cyclist and runner and during races with long and hard efforts it's not uncommon for any cyclist or runner to lose several pounds during a competition. the importance of hydrating with water and / or good sports drinks is of vital importance.
