Is this true? Read this on a team comment.

one teaspoon of sugar equals roughly 4.2 grams of sugar. so, in a 12 can of coke, with 40 grams of sugar, that comes out to over 9 teaspoons in each can!!! below is the nutritional info from the coke website. i went to an online conversion chart to figure the grams-teaspoon ratio.

There's no protein, no fat and no alcohol -- so yes, it's 100% sugar.

This is disgusting. I only put 2 teaspoons of sugar in my tea - 7 more scoops? It doesn't even taste sickeningly sweet. How do they disguise all of that sugar?

when I was pregnant, I changed to diet soda, which I said I would never do because of the taste. Now, I can't even drink regular soda anymore because of the taste - way too sweet.

if that is not enough, coke will clean away (actually, i think it's more like "eat away") at the corrosion sometimes found on car battery cables. and it removes all kinds of calcium build up on sinks, in washing machines, at faucet connections...my father uses coke in a squirt bottle to remove corrosion on old cloth-covered wires when he rewires older homes. yuck!

My plumber said that next time I my drain is clogged, I should pour a bottle of Coke down it. Apparently it's more effective (but less damaging to pipe joints) than Drain-O.

There's also an experiment you can do with a penny, whereby you put a penny in a cup of Coke. I forget the length of time you leave it for, but it will eventually disintegrate.

Now think about what it does to the enamel on your teeth...

Actually, if you want to get technical, there isn't a gram of sugar in coke...if there were, it would be less bad for you. Instead, it's the root of all evil-High Fructose Corn Syrup! (HCFS) Fructose doesn't stimulate insulin the way sugar and other carbohydrates do, so your body doesn't register that you are getting full... So, you eat the calories, your body thinks you still need energy, so you crave and eat more and so on and so on... And HCFS is in EVERYTHING!

I've quit drinking soda for this reason, but when I can get my hands on a Dr. Pepper made in Dublin, TX, I grab it b/c it's sooo good (they're the last DP plant in the US, maybe the world that still uses pure cane sugar).

It probably does, but you should try diet CLEAR pop instead (if your like me and cannot live without soda of some kind) Dark colored pop deteriorates muscle and non-diet pop will make you gain weight faster than anything I can think of!!

Yes, it has sugar, but isn't that the point? That's why I drink it. To be refreshed, have a jolt, have the yang to my yin of my salty meal. It's yummy and not as bad as a tiramisu.

Is it hard to stop drinking coke (and soda) completely?

I was brought up in the States and raised on Coke (and similar products). It was everywhere. At home, at school, at the supermarket, etc. I didn't give my bad habits any thought until I returned to the country of my birth (Poland) and realized that one can in fact live without coke. Here people drink mostly mineral water and tea (coke is too expensive). Plus, it is illegal to market it to children and it cannot be sold in the schools. There aren't many vending machines where you can buy it either. So, you're not being tempted all the time. Actually, while I was at college in the States I had unlimited access to Coke so I drank it every day for about 3 years until I started getting diarrhea on a regular basis. After I stopped drinking it, the diarrhea stopped, but it took another 4 years for the stomach lining to return to normal. Which meant that during that time even if I had a craving and had a few sips it resulted in me having to run and find a bathroom really quick. The truth is that there are many drjnks that taste much better than coke. Try making your own fruit juices. Buy strawberries, (frozen ones are fine too) pour water in a pot, boil, add some sugar, and chill...and you've got your own juice which is amazingly tasty. This is a drink (kompot) which has been made in my country for centuries. After you taste this you will give up Coke for good and wonder...why did I ever drink it? :)

I read recently in a Reader's Digest magazine that for those people who drink one regular soda a day.... If you eliminate it from your diet and change absolutely nothing else....you will lose 15 pounds in a year. So, I'm not sure how much sugar is in it, but it must be pretty bad.

If you want to get really technical here's the facts. Sucrose (table sugar) is made of a molecule of glucose and fructose combined which break apart into their individual components in the stomach and intestine. The most commonly used for of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is about 55% fructose and 45% glucose so your body metabolizes them as basically the same thing. Yes, the problem is that it is in everything and our consumption of sugars in general needs to be reduced drastically, but for everyone who is looking at labels to eliminate HFCS and replace it with other types of "more natural" sugars (ie. honey, sucrose), your body doesn't know the difference. Just consume in moderation.

There's a bunch of journal articles put out by various scientific nutrition societies about the topic, this article in the NYTimes sums up a lot of the discussion going on now...

no way on the penny trick and coke- it's a busted myth on mythbusters, they also used it to clean battery acid, it just made the battery sticky.
