Table manners

Kind of OT but does anyone get grosse out by people who chew with their mouth open? Or leave their elbow on the table? I don't get it. Maybe it's a cultural thing.

sometimes, but I'm less sensitive now...since I have a 10 month old learning to eat! LOL!

I was brought up to use good table manners too. It grosses me out to see people chew with their mouth open. I guess some people were just never taught table manners. I am not shy to tell people to close their mouth while they chew!

Even worse, people who talk with half-chewed food in their mouths. And every now 'n again you have to duck to miss the flying projectiles. Ew!

I agree - can't stand when people chew with their mouth open or talk with food in their mouth. Noticed while I was home over the holidays that my Mom does the later. Didn't notice it growing up. Didn't say anything but wonder if I should? I feel so weird saying something about it to my Mom.

My boyfriend has it worse - he absolutely cannot stand when people chew gum with their mouths open. It drives him crazy and he gets really irritated when someone is doing it around him. It bothers hime to the point where we have had to change seats in a movie theater. It doesn't bother me so much, but I am much more aware of it now that he pointed it out to me....it is amazing how many people do it and I assume most don't realize it.

the nagging girlfriend

I used to go out with a guy -- great guy, but he always chewed with his mouth open and it drove me nuts! Well, he had a deviated septum and couldn't breathe through his nose at all, so he kind of had to chew that way.

When he got the deviated septum fixed, he continued to do it, though. I think it was just _such_ an ingrained habit -- anyway, that was when I started reminding him to close his mouth. I had no idea how much he hated my mentioning it (once a meal, usually) until we went on a rafting/kayaking trip with a group of people. He had drifted a ways away from the main group and appeared to be occupied opening/doing something on board.

"Whatchya doing?" one of the other guys yelled to him.

"Chewing with my mouth open!" he yelled back.

that is me

Could never breathe through my nose, so can't really close my mouth for more than a few seconds. Have had surgery, but it is very difficult to change the habit unless I am consciously thinking about it every moment. The other week, I got all gussied up for a nice dinner out, and my bf complains that I'm chewing with my mouth open :( Ruined my night. So -- I guess us mouth breathers should work on it (ahh, a new source of shame, just what I needed) and the rest of you should have some tolerance!

Hmm, my husband is a mouth breather, which makes me nutty b/c he snores, and b/c when he stares off into space with his mouth open, he almost looks like something is wrong with him! He cannot breathe through his nose either. But, I've never noticed him chewing with his mouth open! So, either it is possible to chew with the mouth closed, and discreetly breathe as well, or else I just never noticed. Now that I know to look, I'm sure I'll find out tonight which it is!

This is a huge pet peeve of mine! How hard is it to chew with your mouth closed?
