Colon Cleanser?

I have been delaying going for colonic irrigation as it just seems so humiliating. I basically want to purge my body after all the excesses of Christmas etc.... After doing some research on the net I have discovered that one can do a colon cleanse at home. Has anybody tried this and what was it like, which one did you purchase, cost there of and where i.e. drug store or off the internet? Sorry for all the questions, but at least this is all confidential with no names appearing.

I got the stomach flu on friday and let me tell you, my colon has been cleansed, top to bottom.

Otherwise, I'm pretty sure colonic irrigation is bunk. I mean, unless you've got an impacted bowel, things work themselves out as they are supposed to do. Plus, doing a "colon cleanse" will kill off all the microflora that are supposed to be in your system, helping you digest your food and process nutriants. So, in the end, you'll do yourself a dis-service. At the very least, talk to an actual, licenced DOCTOR before you start. And if the person you're talking to starts telling you about the "medical-industrial complex," you aren't talking to a real doctor.

You wanna feel better about overeating at christmas, get off your butt and go to the gym.

So you are inferring that I don't go to gym - I wonder what gave you that idea? Bit presumptious don't you think.....For your information I lost weight over Christmas and go to gym regularly. Please read my original post carefully.

here is a link to a lot of discussions on the posted topic. personall, i have to agree that colon cleansing for the hell-of-it, without medical supervision, is dangerous and unnecessary. but, to each his/her own.

all apologies for assuming you were someone looking for a quick weight loss solution- seriously, I meant no offense.

Seriously, though, talk to you doctor before doing this- Like I said, I just got my colon cleaned out with the flu, and it's gonna take me 2 weeks to repopulate my gut with the microflora that belong there. In the meantime, I will be more succeptible to food poisoning (e-coli, etc) and I will have a harder time properly ingesting all the nutrients in my food. I can't imagine doing that to yourself on purpose.

Colon cleansing isn't really worth it unless you have a specific problem you're trying to deal with, e.g. chronic constipation. If it's just that you feel you ate too many rich, unhealthy foods over the holidays, well, a healthy system takes ~18 hours from consumption to elimination...even if yours was a bit unhealthy, you'd have gotten rid of everything weeks ago!

Colonics are invasive, but not humiliating. The technicians I've dealt with were both clinical and informative, and really believed in what they do. However, I didn't have any of the usual things (IBS, constipation) or unusual things (bad skin, lower back pain, even certain kinds of migraines, etc) that colonics can sometimes fix, so ultimately I feel like I did not benefit from this kind of treatment.

If you want to go with a powdered at-home solution, try Oxy (or maybe it's Oxy Mag, as in magnesium) - colonic techs say this is the best on the market. I personally can't stand the taste.

You can safely give yourself a mild cleanse every day by starting your off with a VERY high fiber cereal (>10g per serving, like Fiber 1) and then chasing it with a mug of hot water w/ lemon juice. Drink plenty of water with it because fiber expands, and you don't want to be moving a rock through your system.

Op here ----- thanks for all the suggestions. I have regular bowel movements, so no fears there but after recently visiting a colon cleansing site and reading about the some of the scarey facts such as old impacted faeces in the colon, risk of colon cancer, parasites (long worms being expelled) etc and not knowing anbyody who has used such a product, I thought I would post it here, hoping to get some first hand accounts, but alas either the ladies on this site have not dabbled with this or those are familiar with these products don't visit this particular page :(

I have a lot of experience in this dept. In fact, I just took another dose of my colon cleanse this morning. Basically here is the long of it...
There is a prodcut line called The Ultimate Cleanse. In it's complete package (roughly 150.00-200.00) you will find a detox program that if done properly should in theory "cleanse" your body of all it's toxins, excess feces, etc. The whole system starts and ends with taking some kind of herbal supplement to cleanse certain systems, organs. I found that detoxing my body this way was not totally effective but had to find out what did work thru trial and error. I wasn't starving myself or losing any vital nutrients but didn't feel or see any significant differences by the end of the detox. (I have since found an incredible way to "detox/revitalize" but that's another story for another thread) What you will find with the Colon Cleanse is an ingredient called Senna which is a natural laxative. AKA: Senna C. It just makes you have bowel movements-that's it. Really by having frequent bowel movements for a stretch of a week or so you could feel "lighter" or "cleansed" and in effect have cleansed your body of extra feces hanging around in your colon but if you eat regular high fiber foods you may not feel much after using the colon cleanse as you could be "cleaning" things out more than you may think.) I do use it every so often as a means to rid myself of junk I may have eaten and makes me feel "cleaner." I have had lenghty discussions with my Dr. about it, she doesn't see the damage in it if done once a month or so for a few days. There is also a tea called "smooth move" which is marketed as a laxative tea/cleansing tea that will give you simliar results. I used colon cleanse over the holidays-it did make me feel better about eating lasagna, cookies etc. I don't care if it was short lived-sometimes feeling "cleaned out" even for a little while is helpful. I should tell you when taking Colon Cleanse you can expect similar effects of any other laxative you may have taken in the past. Slight bloating, soft stool and sometimes people may feel abdominal discomfort. For me, it's all short lived and as quick as those symptoms come, they go. Bottle of Colon Cleanse will run ya about 10.00-15.00 you can find it at Whole Foods and other health food stores. Overall, I use it once a month for a few days and feel fine about it. My Dr. knows I use it and as long as I don't over use it, she sees no harm in it. Try it when you don't have to go to work and take the first dosage at night so when you wake up you can expect a movement as soon as you wake up (which is pretty standard for most people anyway) and continue on with the directions. Asking your Dr. is a good idea but I didn't- I turned out fine. As far as going to get a colonic-don't. It's a major waste of money. If your looking for that kind of cleanse, just buy yourself an enema, hang in for a friday night and drink lots of liquids with electolytes. The whole thing is a sham-lots of people I know get them regularly and they are a fancy form of a standard enema you can get at Walgrees. They have these "beds" you lie on in compromising positions and they flush your system with a flow of water until basically your body rejects it and has a reaction of letting go. Much like a gag-relfex in your throat. I never did it-never found the need and with using Colon Cleanse every once in a while I never saw the point. There you have it, anymore questions let me know. I am not an expert just someone who knows a ton about the whole detox thing. There are many opionions about detoxing and have found that everyone has a different view. You have to find one that works for you and for some reason when most people hear the word "detox" they think you are starving your body of vital bacteria, vitamins, nutrients etc. Ignore them, your doing research on it and by the end of it you'll know what will work for you.
