OT: The Pill
I have been considering going on the pill. When I was a teen the Dr put me on it to straighten out my cycle. When it worked itself out I stopped taking it. Now I'm considering it for actual birth control but in my 'older age' I am afraid of taking hormones that inhibit a natural process and that could cause possible weight gain.
Also, I have read that in heavier women the pill may not be as effective, but they dont say how much weight effects it.
I am about 50lbs overweight...
Am I over reacting? Is it a harmless drug? Have any of you heard or experienced horror stories?
Thanks in advance!

Very interesting - Kate just posted in her blog about medications that make you gain weight, including birth control.

I use a non-hormonal IUD and love it. No side-effects for me.

I was on the pill between my first and second child. For me, it decreased my sexual appetite, but it's very rare. After my second child, I asked my doctor about the patch. She said I was 10 pounds overweight for it, and it wouldn't be very effective for me because of my weight. I have never heard of the pill having a weight limit. I am now on the Nuva Ring and I LOVE it. You put it in for three weeks and take it out for one week. It has the least amount of hormones but is still effective. My husband barely feels it during sex, but it can be removed for up to three hours if desired. The only bad thing I have found about the Nuva Ring is that it is not covered by my insurance, so it's about $40 a month for me.
Thanks!

I am 30 years old and have been on the pill off and on for 10 years now through being really heavy and where I am at now And the pill is great I have to check in every 3 months to make sure everything is OK with taking it but great and no weight gain for me.

I have read that the pill is most effective for women under 150lbs, and that the dosage becomes less effective after that weight, but that is just something I read on the internet. I would check with my doctor to be sure.
I switched from Depo Provera to the pill a month ago. I have noticed a definite decrease in my appetite, but that is partially due to minor nausea. The nausea seems to be getting less frequent though, so I'm hoping that it will go away.

Op here, just wanted to say thank you to all of you who have answered my post. I really have been having a tough time with this. I am going to speak with my dr. I just wish they made a pill for guys! We always have to deal with hormones whether its PMS, TOM, pregnancy, or menopause. Can't we get a break?! ;)
But seriously thank for all your sincere comments, I really appreciate it!
