Anyone use Airborne Forumula?

I know this isn't diet or exercise related, but it is health related. Has anyone tried Airborne Formula, the herbal supplement you can take at the first sign of a cold, or when you are going to be around lots of people, like an airplane?

I bought some last night and took 1 dose last night, 1 dose this morning, but I think it's too late for me. I'm curious if anyone else has had success with it, and if so, when exactly did you take it? Before exposure or at first sign of a cold?

I've never taken that, but I have used Zicam at the start of a cold - and, I swear, it works! I've used the nasal swabs. You have to use them as often as it says on the box, though. In my experience, I've felt like I have a little bit of the sniffles, and don't really feel 100%, but, I know that if I didn't use them, I'd have a full-out gross cold. The active ingredient is Zinc, so I'm really not sure how it works, but, it works for me!

Yes, I take airborne all the time! I take it whenever I'm feeling a bit off, or if I've been around a bunch of people (like kids or on an airplane). It's prevented me from getting full blown colds. The last time I took it, my cold stopped at a soar thrat when everyone else at the office got a bad cold for 3 weeks. My husband even ended up with bronchitis from it, and he didn't take any airborne. So, I think it works great!

I know people who swear by this but personally I take the Emergen -C powder you add to water or juice. Have been for years and any time I feel a cold coming on I dose up on that, drink lots of hot tea and take it easy and I haven't been sick in almost 4 years.

still sick...

I tried "airborne" as I was taking a long airline flight back east, thoght it might boost my immune system a bit, though rigorous clinical trials have not been done, and I'm all about the EVIDENCE, not the ANECDOTES. Anyway, 3 day slater I got a really bad bronchitis, viral, which is still hanging on (coughing up crud) 4 1/2 weeks later. Of course, this is also only MY anecdote...I believe in eating well, getting your flu shot, staying in shape, and hoping that this kick-ass virus may confer a little immunity for the next one!

In regards to the airborne question....I am just getting ready to graduate pharmacy school so maybe i can shed dome light on this...
Airborne is comprised of mostly high dose vitamins and herbals. In some studies with zinc, like the product Zicam, the duration of the rhino virus (common cold virus) was slightly decreased by approximately 1 days. Other studies have shown no difference from placebo. You have to be really careful with the claims of herbal and "natural" products like this. The FDA which regulates the safety and efficacy of prescription and over the counter medication does not evaulate the claims made by natural products. In other words, they don't have to prove that this product actually works to market it in this way. In fact, there is no way to know that you are actually getting what is on the label or even stuff that is not supposed to be there.
So...I'll get off my soap box now....just a cautionary note.
You can try it, but just watch out for the claims on these types of products in general. Often times they are a very costly out of pocket expense with little valid evidency that they actually work.

Echinacea is one of those herbs that claim to be so good for you and give you all sorts of benefits. Funny that the studies show the opposite. My brother-in-law swears by it and all sorts of other "herbal remedies" but yet he is always sick and it stays with him for a long time. Odd that he keeps spending all this money for these natural, herbal remedies, you'd think he'd realize they don't work so well.

I haven't tried Airborne (yet) I have some in my desk drawer, but I do swear by ColdEez, if I take it at the first sign of a cold, if it's not gone in 3 days, it nearly gone, and I'm the type of chick that can hold a cold for at least 7-10 days.

I keep a steady suppy of Airborne in my home. We take it at the first sign of a cold and it does make a difference. A tsp Bragg's apple cider vinegar with raw honey in a glass of water is also a great cold deterant.

coldeez

An article in the New York Times,Nov 29th, highlights possible problems w. accumalative acetaminophen - Liver failure one of the nastiest -death a little more-so, it is in many cold products, Coldeez included. So be aware that when you are dosing yourself w. tylenol or such that the recommended maximum daily dose for adults is 4 grams, or 4,000 milligrams.

to quote "These compounds include Excedrin, Midol Teen Formula, Theraflu, Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine, and NyQuil Cold and Flu, as well as other over-the-counter drugs and many prescription narcotics, like Vicodin and Percocet. "

"I see some young women who have been suffering flulike symptoms for the better part of a week, and not eating much," Dr. Davern said. "They start with Tylenol, and maybe add an over-the-counter flu medicine on top of that, and pretty soon they've been taking maybe six grams of acetaminophen a day for a number of days. In rare cases that can be enough to throw them into liver failure."

You may want to cut and paste if the link doesn't work, it takes a better techie than me to get a direct link!

acetaminophen overdose

The pharmacist and some other posters make superb points, the main one being: KNOW WHAT YOU"RE TAKING!!! I had a friend who nearly died of a "tylenol" overdose, and she was not paying attention to labels. Just because one can buy it over the counter does not make it inocuous or safe.
Do some real research, use medically based websites, stay informed. Ther is so much quackery and unproven crap out there. My mom is an RN, as am I, one of her favorite quotes is "Just because it's "natural" doesn't mean it's good, dog s**t and rattlesnake venom are natural , too !"

I always have a bitlife supply of Airborne on hand at home. When a cold first appears, we take it, and it does help. Another excellent cold deterrent is a teaspoon of Bragg's apple cider vinegar mixed with raw honey in a glass of water.
