What Did You Use to Eat?

I've been eating very healthy for 5 months now. I don't miss some of the things I use to eat. In fact, I was thinking about it today and I am totally disgusted with my old eating habits. For example...

$8 worth of Taco Bell for a meal. (No drive thru food in 5 months.) Half a loaf of bread and half a stick of butter. (I use to buy a pack of butter each week. I still have the same butter from 5 months ago.) 4 Lee's sandwiches in one sitting (I treat myself to 1 a week now.) A pint of ice cream. Two or three burgers and consider the lettuce and tomatoes my vegetable for the day. 2 corn dogs AND a polish sandwich from Wienerschnitzel. A 2 liter of Diet Coke in a day. A whole large pizza. Three item Chinese food plates.

I never thought I ate poorly. But dang! Looking back... how did I not keel over from a heart attack?! I could probably eat that in one week.

What is some crazy crap you've eaten?

Oh man don't talk about the chineese. I love chineese food.
The only thing that I crave from my old days... 6 months ago is KFC. I still have it but only once a month. I have a free day.
I used to have 2 Jumbo Jacks and 4 tacos from Jack in the box and then use 3 ranch dressings for the tacos and if I ordered hamburgers anywhere it was 2 and always with extra mayo and pickles. I knew they had to be fresh then. Any time you change it. Taco bell was 2 soft tacos and a nacho supreme.
Oh but Pizza was the big one. I loved pizza and the more toppings the better. Tons of cheese.
I have probably had as much cheese in 6 months that I used to eat in a day. Not every day but often enough. We would go through 2-4 pounds a week. I don't like butter so that was not too much of a problem for me to give up. I love the butter spray and I can't believe it't not butter spray.
But for me to be able to change my eating habbits I had to be able to have pizza. So I make my own tortilla pizza and use 1 slice of cheese and tons of veggies. I love Ragu combo veggie. Perfect for any sauce you need.
My big thing was meat. That has been a hard thing for me to cut back on. I would eat 3 or 4 times the amount of meat at each meal and have 4 or 5 meals a day. I know why I gained so much. But I didn't care. I was in too much pain to care. Physical and emotional. But I finally got ahold of myself and decided I wanted better for me. So I make healthy choices now. Except one day a month. And on that day I can't even eat 1/3 of what I used to.
Sometimes I think it is good to look back and see how far you have come. And recognize how your palatte changes. I don't even want a lot of those foods now. Or not cooked in the same way.
Our grocery bill may be higher but we always have meat in the freezer and I feel good about what I am eating and the choices I am making. And most of all my body likes this food much better. I feel stronger and in control.
Thanks for the thread I am curious how others have changed too.

Sometimes it's good to look back and remind ourselves of how far we've come! I used to go nuts at night and make multiple plates of chips and melted cheese and then dip them in sour cream - sometimes 3x a night - ugh. Now I feel bad if I have anything at night when I'm not hungry.

I used to pig out on fried chicken...having it at least every other day. I have a sweet tooth so cake, ice cream, chocolate (which I still think isn't all that bad for you in moderation), donuts...And eating chips all into the night...also waking up in middle of the night craving and eating any leftovers in the fridge.

Now, I eat salads almost every day. Steamed veggies on non-salad days...still trying to incorporate fruit and calcium in diet. And I no longer (very rarely) eat in the middle of the night. I take vitamin supplements and fish oil.I also work out about 3 to 5 times a week.

I've only lost about 10 to 15lbs in two months but I'm feeling the difference...have more energy and sleep better.

Thanks for the thread...great reminiscing.

OP-- how much weight have you lost since eating better the past 5 months?

I used to eat a lb of pasta tossed with olive oil and cheese and whatever kind of fatty meat I could find in the house - sausage, bacon or sometimes chicken - then add soy sauce - A LOT because of all the cheese...... oh man.. I cant even calculate the calroies on that one. It makes me sick to think about it.... but the funny thing is, I would eat about 1/2, then I would need a sweet chaser, then eat the rest. UGH - all alone and in front of tv. i cant imagine now and Ive done it hundreds of times along with all the other horrible things i put into my body

Well I've always eaten lots of fresh fruits & veggies so no problem there. My downfall was the junk food. I'd pour a snack size bag of fritos on top of my salad and call it "croutons". And every day I ate a big bag of potato chips, a bag of almond m&ms, a pint of Ben & Jerry's (different flavor every day). Then there were the Monday/Wednesday/Friday Burger King egg & cheese croissant with large order of hash browns breakfasts from the drive through on the way to work, the Wendy's french fries with ketchup & large diet coke at the drive through on my way home from work every day, and once a week I'd have to bring home a bucket of KFC (would take me several days to eat it all, but I'd snack on a piece in between meals until it was gone).

Now I don't eat any fast food, chips or candy at all. Just eating real food without extra fats, chemicals, etc. And I'm down 53 lbs. Just thinking about the stuff I used to eat makes me feel queasy.

What do I Use to eat...what?

Usually I use a fork to eat most solid things, spoons for liquid things, my fingers on occasion....

If you're asking what I USED to eat, I ate a lot of crap. I am so thankful for PT!

For those of you who are about to complain about us grammer nazis, relax. I'm just having a little chuckle.

OMG, I am so glad someone else could eat a whole bag of almond m&m's in one sitting. Oreos, mexican food with guacamole, and candy bars. It's all for me! That is my downfall in life. UGH!

Yeah, it's fairly disgusting to think about how much I used to eat; a bag of pasta per meal? No problem. A bag of German spiced cookies (Gewuerz Spekulatius. Mmmmm)? Yes, please. Bag after bag of marzipan kartoffeln? Yep. I was in complete denial of my portion distortion. I never ate out, but super-sized everything myself.

I agree.with your comment about the grammar nazi who can't spell..although I have to admit the "use to eat" header was almost incomprehensible to me when I first glanced at this blog. I had to 'cipher it. I am chuckling too....

I'm sorry, but that made me laugh so hard! I've done some hilariously fatty things like that, as well. I used to dip Triscuits in buttermilk ranch dressing, put cheddar cheese on top, and call them nachos, haha!

I'm so glad I figured out my health early before I became morbidly obese and bedridden at 22.

I lost 20 pounds in 5 months. I wanted to take it slow. But now I'm thinking it is too slow. I'm a little frustrated.

why are ppl frustrated over "slow" weight loss? that's awesome progress! i mean i guess if you have a lot of weight to lose then maybe you'd consider that slow but still. i guess b/c i have 20 pounds to lose so i'd be pretty happy with that amount of time.

it's better to keep it at a moderate pace so you don't gain it back.

Isn't it amazing after you stop eating fast food for awhile how unappealing it becomes? I can count on one hand the number of times i have been to a McDonalds in the past decade!

I, too had no problem eating whole bags of candy. I would get a large handful of M&Ms EVERYTIME I walked near the kitchen.

The other one that I kick myself for is the daily large mocha. Holy calories, Batman!

When I started with PT, I wished I had major things like this to change! To an extent, you are lucky!

The things I had to cut out were bagels with light laughing cow or cream cheese on top, turkey sandwiches on regular whole grain bread (substitute now for low-carb, low-cal), a tsp of sugar in my coffee, etc. And, mostly, portion size.

Sure, occasionally, I ate some of the kind of junk mentioned above, but it was always a special treat to me, and I always felt guilty afterwards. I probably hadn't eaten a candy bar or a bag of chips since I hit puberty. And still the weight kept piling on!

I've lost about 15 lbs now, in 2.5 years, and I'm ecstatic! So, for those of you with slower weight loss than you'd like, just keep reminding yourself how great it is that (maybe for the first time) you actually weigh less than you did before! You are not gaining anymore! The weight is going down!!! That's HUGE!!!!!!!!!!

I used to eat 250g bags of crisps over the course of a Sunday on a regular basis (once a month) or 500 mls of ice cream over 2 days (a pint?), and thought that I was bad, but I am eternally astonished by these threads and what people used to eat. I am both horrified and envious of the amount of junk food available in the US and would really, really like to taste most of it, if only for the experience! I don't even have any idea what a "lee's sandwich" is, but I want one!

I can, however, entirely sympathise with the poster who ate Spekulatius and marzipan until it came out of her ears! I love them both. During one bout of stuffing myself, I ate an entire block of marzipan cut up into thick slices. Bring on Christmas and the German supermarkets selling Spekulatius, marzipan and lebkuchen! I still eat them, but only in moderation and not entire packs of the stuff at a time.

i love this thread!

I don't know what it is, but this thread is really entertaining me! I don't know if I have had any major major binges, but I did/kinda still do eat just complete crap. Quantity isn't really me problem, its quality.

My favorite nasty treat was Thanksgiving leftovers... large dinner rolls, cut in half and slathered with mashed potatoes, butter and gravy.. sometimes turkey, eaten like a sandwich. Good God that made me happy.

I used to eat like CRAP: here are a list of my favoites. I still eat all these things but in moderation!! =)

Mexican food galore, my favorite
tons of cheese
huge servings of pasta in alfredo
1/2 a loaf of garlic bread in one sitting
FAST FOOD: McDonalds, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Wendy's
fried anything...
pizza
chips, chips and more chips

That's all that comes to mind now... And I still crave the occasional fast food binge but they are not very frequent!

The fast food industry around my home and work has suffered tremendously since I have been eating healthier. I would eat two breakfast burritos and hash browns. Or a couple of Taco Bell burritos and an order of nachos. I haven't had bacon in months! French fries are no longer part of my diet.

I just finished some brown rice and vegetable medley. Filling and really tasty. There is no sarcasm in my voice.

Oh my gosh.... I completely forgot about bacon! I would keep cooked bacon on hand at all times to throw into everything! eggs, on sandwiches, you name it... I used to start my soups by cooking the veggies in bacon before adding the stock... I would cook turkey breasts by wrapping them in bacon..

Bacon was waaaaay too involved in my diet....

I used to eat a McDonalds breakfast, or Chick-fil-a breakfast almost every morning and then would also eat out for lunch from some fast food joint - usually one of those mexican places (moe's or chipotle) or Panera. I no longer indulge in this activity and only allow myself one or two breakfasts a month. TOPS!!!
I eat way more fruits and veggies now and don't eat out more than once a week.

You've seen us over here right? Don't be envious! Ha. Be glad you don't have access to all this junk! Although, I was over there recently (and could barely find anything palatable to eat - sorry!) and saw a smattering of US fast food chains, so learn from us and visit only occasionally!!

Way to go 8:46! Good for you :)

I used to eat the Taco Bell taco salad (this was 20 years ago) with double meat and cheese! Back then I associated 'salad' with 'diet' and had NO clue of what I was consuming! I shudder to think how many calories that bad boy had.

What Did You Use to Eat?

HA I Love this one, I used to drive thru sometimes 4 times a day.

Breakfast: Carl's Jr Sourdough Sandwhich, and hash browns

Lunch: Carls Jr. BBQ Western Cheeseburger and Fries with the Ranch

Dinner: Sushi on a good day

After the workout meal : Mcdonalds Kids Cheeseburger Meal.

Fruit??? NEVER!!!!

How did I eat like that....How did I eat like that and never weight more then 250. Some people drink and I drive, I guess I used to be guilty of eating and driving. The best part is, I cant even imagine eating any of that crap now. Gross.

first go to Burger King drive through for a whopper with cheese and bacon, onion rings and some fried jalapeno cheese things.. i can still see myself maneuvering all the food in the car so it was accessible - parking someplace as secluded as possible, then going right to mcdonalds for the sweet chaser - a couple of those deep fried hot apple pie thingies. was totally numb afterwards.. can't even imagine doing that now.

in fact, I no longer feel self conscious eating out alone.... since I'm eating healthy foods

I would think nothing of having two breakfast burritos or a couple of breakfast sandwiches. Then two burgers for lunch. No fries because they are fatty. (HA! That was my actually thought process.) And then for dinner a three item plate from Chinese take out. I could down a pint of ice cream no problem.

what'd i used to eat? About every other day I would want some chewy candy or chocolate, so I'd go to the store and get either Oreo's, Ice Cream, Chocolate covered raisens, Swedish Fish, Gummy Candies, Chocolate Milk, Ice Cream, Ice Cream, or Ice Cream. I've got a sweet tooth! I would think every time that I would just have a bit of whatever I bought...but that was never the case- I'd eat the whole pint of Ice Cream! After about 10 years of these sweets attacks, I finally realized that it didn't actually satisfy anything. It felt good anticipating their yumminess, and it tasted great, but those 15 minutes weren't so great that it was worth feeling like crap the rest of the day, the rest of the week, month, year, 10 years! So...it looks like now, I am never going to buy those things again. GOOD RIDANCE!

I actually still eat almost all the same stuff, just in much smaller portions and less frequently. I still have plenty of processed foods and some empty calories but I do it inside of my calorie budget and along with nutritious food, plenty of water and exercise. I don't have anything that I miss... and I've been sitting here thinking about it. In fact, this past Thanksgiving I told myself I could pig out, and I couldn't do it! One plate of food and a small slice of pie and I was beyond stuffed. Before it would have been three plates and a plate full of dessert and I would have been ready to go again in two hours. Now that's a lifestyle change!

The only things that are really off limits for me are full-fat mayo, just because light mayo tastes the same to me and if I can't get it where I am I just leave it off and I'm totally fine, and regular soda. I haven't had a regular soda in close to a year. Now I am a Diet Coke devotee, which isn't healthy I know but I'm skinnier than I have ever been so I'll take calorie free Nutrasweet over a ton of sugar any day!
