Starvation

I have exercised, 5 to 6 days a week, Hard! I have dieted, brought out the food scale, added calories in my little booklet, along with the daily exercise I walk my dog 3 times a day 10 minutes at a pop sometimes more, had my thyroid checked and was put on meds, my thyroid levels are now normal. I keep gaining weight. So I have decided to not eat anything except my fiber supplements, and vitamins. Unhealthy sure, but you know what, I said If I reached 200 pounds I would kill myself. Guess what at the doctors office yesterday 200 pounds on the scale. So, thats it. I am trying starvation and if it kills me fine. I would rather be dead then go on like this. I will let you know how rapid this weight loss system is. I am going to the drug store today and stock up on Hoodia appetite suppresants and diet green tea! Hopeless? yes, pitiful? yes, cry for help? probably but guess what, nobody has helped me in 2 years of hard work and that's it. I give up!

What does your doctor say about your weight problems?

have you helped yourself in the two years? really, be honest with yourself. can you 100% say you've only stayed within your recommended calories and fat grams per day? Can you say that you've put every effort into your workout and not just a little work out?

sometimes, we believe we've done everything we can do and the fact is we don't, we lie to ourselves and others to justify our actions. i'm not saying that's what you did, i am asking you to be honest with yourself.

i'd hate for your new plan to kill you because i believe you can do it....

You stupid ASS! How can you think that getting to 200 lbs makes you unworthy to be alive? You should be thankful that you ARE alive and that you CAN walk your dog and exercise.

Take a look at the profile and logs of this PT member: workinit
Her profile is public. I check er out often to see what she's eating and how she's moving. See the kinds of medical problems she has and how she is dealing with them. See how she is thankful everyday that she wakes up and realizes she is still alive.

After you read about her, think long and hard about the rediculous public threat you made about your own self. You probably still have some thyroid or glandular issue and should see a doc or a specialist for evaluation. And definitely a psychiatrist to help you get your head in the right place.

Oh that was nice calling someone a name who is clearly depressed... No one is stupid and no one at all deserves to be called a name by someone who doesn't know them.

sometimes tough love is the best. sometimes tough love pulls people out of their selfish bubble to see they have so much to live for and can lose the weight even though it takes a long time!

calling people, again who you don't know, names is not tough love...

OP please go talk to someone in your town/city, a friend or something. You need to be actually speaking to people in your real life so you can get a *real* perspective on how you are feeling.

I agree that making a declaration such as this on a public forum is a bit much, but a cry for help is a cry none the less. For goodness sakes go talk to someone and read them your post. Additionally there are many people wayyyy over 200 pounds who are happy, and are working to lose weight. You are not any less of a person by being 200 pounds.

I am the original poster. I have honestly gone far beyond what seems to work for everyone else. I ran 2 miles a day for the first year until I had a hysterectomy and my doctor said no more runing for a year. Then I started doing the Firm. Weight and Cardio mixture. 35 to 55 minute workouts 5 to 6 days a week. Full in. I enjoy working out. I like exercise. I appreciate the way I can go up 5 flights of stairs and not be winded. I appreciate the extra energy. I love the fact I sleep like a baby. I understand that weight loss is supposed to be only a fringe benefit of working out. I have all ofthe internal indicators that my diet and exercise are working. Low cholestorol, perfect blood pressure. Great readings on my stress tests. I never in my entire life had a weight issue. I was always thin until my thyroid issues of the past 2 years.
My doctor said "Well, your weight is creeping up because it is harder in the Winter, keep doing what your doing and in the Spring it will fall off." That was yesterday. Sounds like crap to me and probably toyou too. So! What's up with that scale? I don't know. I am so disheartened that there is no external benefit. So, am I to be the healthy fat person around?
So the plan is to keep up my work outs, and to keep it to no more then the 300 calories I will get from drinking Green tea everyday.

I expected at least one of you to be a complete douche. Hope you got that out of your system. Take your sanctimonious diatribe and stick it where the sun don't shine. As soon as I feel the need to explain my motivation to a foul mouthed, egocentric such as yourself I will let you know. Until then stay out of my thread.

Someone is crying out for help and you call them a Stupid Ass? How's that for support. F---ing idiot!!!!

However, to the OP, killing or starving yourself isn't going to do any good either. How does that solve your problem? You need to find another doctor, one that might be able to help you.
Here's one suggestion to try. Get the book Extreme Fat Smash ($13.95), do the plan for one week, that's only 7 days and it's the detox period but you do eat! It tells you exactly what and how much to eat. MANY people lost substantial amounts of weight on it. Try it, stick to it to the LETTER including the exercise guidelines and then if that doesn't work you may definately have a medical issue getting in your way. I have seen posts of 6, 8, 10 pounds lost on this first phase. I only lost 5, however, I didn't have that much to lose to begin with. This book takes the guesswork out of all of the eating and what to eat and if you do it right and are honestly following it and see no results, then you really have something to show your doctor. Do NOT GIVE UP! You are worth much more than that. I have been OVER 200 pounds in my lifetime and had the same thoughts as you but I now have a wonderful husband (met him when I was fat) and 3 children., Do you know how grateful I am that those attempts were not successful? You would never know what a bright wonderful future you may have ahead of you. Think about it. I'm not a religious person persay but you might also do a little praying for guidance regarding this. Hang in there, stay on this site, you'll see others struggling right along with you and together we CAN do it!

Definitely see another doctor. Putting yourself in starvation mode is not going to help. It sounds like you're doing everything you can. There are doctors who do care enough about their patients to actually help them. Unfortunately, it does not appear that the doctor you have now does. Please, please, please do not go into starvation mode!!!

OP-HERE'S THE THING- YOU WILL NOT SEE RESULTS IF YOU CUT YOUR CALORIES TO 300 A DAY!!!!!! Your body will go instinctively into starvation mode and HOLD ON TO YOUR FAT. It will produce NO results, then you will be no where. Try the above posters suggestion, EFS, I've tried it too and it does work!

Thank you so much for your encouragement. I know that depression goes right along with Thyroid issues as does weight gain and inability to loose weight. I did weight watchers for 3 months and gained 8 pounds. I have done several detoxes over the past 2 years. Everything from Hollywood diet, to Colon Cleanser, to Cayenne pepper. None of which had any positive effect. I have not tried Fat Smash. Can I get it in the bookstore?

Before you try another "diet" get a second or thrid doctors opinion... you'll end up less frutsrated and depressed if you know there is something inhibiting your ability to lose weight.

3:15 here - You sure can get it at Barnes and Noble or basically any book store. There are two, one is the regular Fat Smash and the other is the Extreme. They are both different in what is "allowed" but if you use the book it also gives you recipes for the foods allowed on that particular day. Measure your food based on the books guidelines. Then, also you can join the FAT SMASH team on this site and you will get TONS of encouragement, information, recipes, others results, etc. I'm telling you, it's worth a shot! What have you got to lose with trying just one more, right? Hang in there, you are worth it!
By the way, I'm no longer following the diet, just the concept of eating several times a day so I'm not telling you this to get you to join a specific group or anything like that... I'm just telling you to try it out, you may see a big difference that will give you results to keep you motivated with your already healthy lifestyle. Also, another bit of advice, definately get yourself another doctor!

First I am curious how old you are. It matters in terms of what your body can take. The older you get the less you can do to it and get away with it.
Thats not to say you can get away with it because you are young. Every person is different.

I would be really careful with the suppliments. Especially if there is ephedra in it. It works against the heart and if you are already going to put a strain on your heart that would really concern me.

Curious how many calories you have been ingesting.
Some peoples bodys lose weight very slowly or you have to be ultra careful in order to lose.

Then I wonder what are you going to do once the weight comes off? If you start eating again the amount you were you will gain. Just as you have been.
I would rather you go to a dr that understands your difficulties and talk to him/her about it. If they don't know what to do have them refer you to a dietician/nutritionist.
You have to be able to get to the bottom of this.

Also, I have no experience with this personally but from what I read on the threads here it seems you could have an allergy to some food that could be working adversely in your quest to lose weight. It could be a simple thing that you just aren't aware of.

Believe me I understand the desparation. I know we all experience things differently but can have similar feelings. Please, instead of harming yourself, love yourself, take care of your body.

Oh and one more thing, I don't say this to scare you but to let you know it happens. Expect to lose a huge amount of hair. Just by going down to 850 cal a day I have lost about 2/3, maybe a little less of my hair. Thankfully it is long so it isn't noticable to people who don't know me.

I am not trying to talk you out of this because I don't believe I can. I have been in a place where no matter what anyone said to me it didn't matter I was too overwhelmed with what was going on.
But just so you know the one thing that a lady told me that I could eat that would help me and very low calorie is egg whites. Full of protien and only about 17 cal each.
Cook it in butter spray (pam) and at least you have some protien for your heart.
Remember your heart is a muscle and needs to be fed.

And please let us know what you are doing and keep us informed.

My doctor once made that same stupid comment about putting on weight in winter. He was at least 70 lbs overweight himself. I've changed to a real doctor, one who practices what she preaches, and by the way, I lose best Jan-Apr.

A good Registered Dietician can show you how to eat right for you and your health issues, help you figure out any food sensitivities/allergies, etc.

If you go ahead with this desperate plan, you will probably lose about 5 lbs in the first few days because you're emptying your intestines without packing anything in at the top. If you manage to continue doing this for a few weeks, you'll experience all the joys of anorexia at 195 lbs - your skin will get pasty, your hair will thin, your nails will flake off, your breath will stink, and you will scare the hell out of the people that love you.

I am reading everyone's comments out of curiosity and hope. I am not blaming my Thyroid for this current situation. I am just being honest about what is going on. If I didn't mention it people like you would say go get your thyroid checked. So I stated it right off. But thanks for you list of ailments anyway.
I have been looking into this Starvation Mode theory. Please read the view on this from Weight Watchers.

it's not a list of my ailments--it's a list of the things i deal with on a daily basis, but i buck up like a big girl and deal with the cards i was handed. Quit whining to everyone how desperate you are to lose weight with your ridiculous plan and then not expect criticism.

Really I thought this web site was about support. Not criticism. Other posters have really helped with their suggestions. As a matter of fact I have already looked in to finding a local dietician through my Health care. If you think I am whining and you don't like it, stay out of the thread. Your not forced to be here. I am sorry this isn't about you. You can start a thread called "What is your problem? So what, here are mine." You can tell people how there problems don't matter in comparison to yours and how they need to 'buck up' whatever that coloquilism refers too.

I will answer your questions happily.
I am 38
No ephedra
900 calories a day, however over the last 2 years it has been from 800 to 1500 depending on the diet plan
I never thought about a food allergy. I have made an appointment with a dietician to look into that one. Thank you for that suggestion. I am allergic to bees but that is it as far as I know. So that is an untraveled road worth going down.
Thanks for the understanding. It isn't like I am planning a bridge jump or anything. I am just at a wits end and seeing no hope in sight. I decided rather then take that drastic and final of a measure I would go to the less permanent alternative. Plus typing with you folks here has been really helpful. Thank you all!

Do NOT ask ANYONE to support your decision to starve yourself.
Take the criticism - constructive and otherwise - for what it truly is: a sign that this is not a remotely sane or normal thing to do.

Didn't ask for it. Not gonna get yours. So, being as the only sane thing I can think to do is not have a typing argument with someone who could matter less and obviously could care less. Point taken. I am sure you need the last word so have it. Good luck and may all your wishes come true.

Hey...I don't care about having the last word unless by some fluke, I suddenly find myself with the power, influence and ability to stop a faceless stranger who could care less about me and my opinions from destroying her health for the sake of her figure.

Try doing this ONE THING, since it's quicker than finding a good RD - get your BMR/RMR (Basic or Resting Metabolic Rate) tested. It'll cost $40-80 depending on where you live. Don't exercise the day before except for walking the dog - that way you won't get a false high because of the residual effect of the type of workout you did. Do this before you start starving, because that's guaranteed to kill your BMR and give you a useless number.

Once you get that number, you will have a better picture of what your caloric needs are. If your BMR is outrageously low, like 800 (calories you need in a day if you lie in bed the whole time), then you know something is screwing with your metabolism. It's great info to present the RD with when you get around to seeing one. The two measuring devices on the market are the MedGem and the BodyGem (I'm not suggesting that you buy one - they're like $1000) - google the terms and you should be able to find someone in your area who has one and provides this service.

Thank you for your response. I hope that you find the answers you need to get safely on the road to weight loss.

Thank you also for the link to the starvation mode myth. I found it very interesting. And supports my doctors letting me diet at 850 cal but no lower.
Along with vitamins. I found that calorie amount was too low for me. After a few months I was too weak so I increased my calories to 1000 a day and sometimes a bit more.
I have a lot more strength.

There have been some very good suggestions on this thread.
But I have to say I believe there to be a difference between supporting the person and supporting the actions.
OP I support you.
