Solutions for dry & cracked hands?

Hi Everyone,
For some reason, I've been getting really dry & cracked skin on my hands this winter. I've slathered on lotion, I've been drinking water, to no avail...

In particular, my right hand is most severe--I have "fissures" where the skin literally cracks and just hurts like crazy on my fingertips.

I wash my hands a lot, but I've been trying to lotion them well..

Does anyone else have this problem? What are your solutions?!

Help!!

look for a hand 'mousse' - they penetrate the skin faster. Fortunately I do not have dry skin to that extent but my mother does and recommends this.

When I woked in a bookstore I had painfully dry hands - a bit of mineral oil would clear that up very quickly.

I've been trying bag balm, lotions, Burt's bees, Vaseline lotions, etc... Even using ahumidifier...
I think i'ts because I have recently been handling a lot more paperwork.. It is terribly painful!!

Glove Potion

At Bath and Body works you can get gloves along with Glove Potion #9. You put the lotion on and then leave the gloves on for a while. It really does wonders for my hands - I have the same problem with dryness and cracking during the winter.

Also it is helpful to put neosporin on those fissures. They are open wounds and vulnerable to infection just like any other cut. You can use a regular bandaid also or look for a liquid bandaid.

You could put lotion on and then put on gloves (look in the pharmacy for the first aid-doctors office kind). I also have used vaseline which works fairly well.

The thing that I have found to be MOST helpful for keeping my hands from getting to the cracking point is to get a vegetable oil (I like olive oil the best) and rub a liberal amount on your hands. Put a good amount of salt on your palm and begin to gently rub your hands down for about a minute or so. Rinse and then gently wash. Follow with your favorite lotion if you'd like. Please be careful about your cuts though. You may want to let the neosporin do some work in healing them up first before you use the salt.

To the last poster... Thanks... I may try that.. I forgot about the "liquid bandage".. I have some, and it usually helps (sometimes I get cracks on my heels if I don't lotion them enough.)... I've been trying to use a bit of peroxide on the cuts at night before I go to bed.

It must be because I'm right-handed because this rarely happens on my left hand, only my right!

Plants!

I use to go through so much lotion, but I was pleasantly surprised this year that I rarely need it anymore. The difference? I now eat a plant based diet. Our skin is our largest organ - it makes sense that I would see results there from all the nutrition I'm packing in each day. We really are what we eat, and my body is loving the plants.

What you describe sounds like a dyshydrotic keratosis. A steroid ointment will cure it. Your doctor can look at it, confirm the diagnosis, and give you a prescription.

I used to have the same problem, but it stopped once I started to put lotion on after washing my hands at work - every time! - without fail - using Gold Bond Ultimate healing formula lotion.
I keep it at my desk & put some on as soon as I come back from the ladies room.

Gold Bond Ultimate Healing Lotion is awesome! Most other lotions just make my hands drier, but the Gold Bond really hydrates and heals.

I think cracked skin on your fingers can be a sign of Vitamin A deficiency. Wearing gloves after putting on lotion of your choice -- or vitamin E -- is helpful
