Description:
1 slice of whole wheat bread with a 2-3" circle of bread cut out and placed beside it on an ungreased frying pan. Brown the bread lightly over a low flame. Then add 2 to 3 drops of oil or butter to the hole. Let it melt and crack an egg into it. Cook until the egg starts to set, then carefully flip the bread and the egg over to brown the other side. Season to taste. A wonderful old-fashioned breakfast treat.

A wonderful old-fashioned breakfast treat. Limit to once or twice a week if you are watching your cholesterol.

I love this breakfast (so does my 3 year old)! I have never heard it called toad in a hole though :) that is really cute. We call it a birds nest..I've also heard it called a bullseye. Thanks for adding!

Haha, my dad always used to make these for us - he called them spit-in-the-eyes! Which was pronounced "spitney eyes."
They're the BEST though when you first butter the bread on both sides, and then cut the hole out of the middle. Then you can just cook on a nonstick skillet without any more oil. You can do it healthier though if you just use PAM.

Yet another name for these: "one-eyed sandwich". (just like my mom used to make).

I grew up having this and still have it from time to time. I am also Native American but we always called it a birds nest.

my favourite breakfast!! I always cut the hole first, then butter all the sides so that i don't dirty the cookie cutter and if u don't cook it too long, dip the hole in the egg yolk mmm. we call them moose-eye pies, but my aunt did call it toad in the hole
