Bizzare

Our grocery list has split personalities !

For us:
Skim milk, chicken breasts, lean beef, granola bars, fat free cottage cheese, spinach, carrots, oatmeal, whole grain bread, fat free yogurt, strawberries, bananas, wheat germ, flax meal...

For the food my wife will create for the party we are going to on the weekend:
heavy wipping cream, butter, marsala, sugar, brown sugar, ice cream, chocolate sauce, full fat sour cream...

So funny seeing the latter bringing up the caboose on the conveyor belt, the cashier must thing we have issues !

Ever try to cheat the guests? Guaranteed they'll never know if you don't tell them. If you don't know what I mean, I'm talking about altering the cooking ingredients for the better and no one will be the wiser. Served a bacon/asparagus/mushroom quiche for Easter and it disappeared. Secret? Fat-free half and half instead of cream, Best of the Egg instead of whole eggs, uncured center cut lower-sodium bacon with no preservatives or nitrites, and only 4 oz. cheese for the whole pie. Whipped those eggs until they were almost peaked, broiled my mushrooms in Smart Balance spread, blanched the fresh asparagus instead of using canned because of they zap the nutrients, and completely and gently flavored the mix with powdered mustard, white pepper, cayenne, and nutmeg.

11:29 - thanks - those are genius tips...
- my wife is totally awesome - she cooks great healthy meals for us all the time, however, when she makes dessert for events, she goes for the gusto - like the huge "from scratch" homemade Cinnabons (better than the mall) or her astonishingly various and complex cookies - in fact this week she hand made a four layer (graham, lime curd, cheesecake, sour cream top) key lime cheesecake that was absolutely divine -
She has professional food people in her family, so I think it is in her blood and to her it is both a hobby and an art - so I can't get between her and her masterpieces - to do so would be an inexusable breach ;)
but thanks :)

I just got through with my grocery list. I'm actually heading out the door in a bit. Here's what's on my list.

PRODUCE - Bananas, garlic, green pepper, romaine, mushrooms, parsley, red and yellow onions, cherry tomatoes, ginger, cauliflower, and brocoli.

NUTS - Almonds, cashews, peanuts, and walnuts.

DAIRY - Feta cheese, heavy cream, milk, eggs, mozzarella string cheese, parmesan cheese, grated mexican cheese blend, and organic yogurt (plain).

MEAT - Center cut bacon, lean ground beef, boneless skinless chicken breast, whole chicken (to use for making my own broth), ground white turkey meat, center cut pork chops.

CANNED - Black beans, dark red kidney beans, diced tomatoes, tomatoe sauce, beef and chicken broth.

CONDIMENTS & SPICES - Dijon mustard, italian dressings, calamatta olives, ranch dressing mix (Hidden Valley brand - 1/2 mayo, 1/2 yogurt, and milk), Soy sauce, chipotle chili powder, cumin, chili powder, curry powder.

That's pretty much it. Hope this helps.

I feed a large family on a single income, and here's what we tend to buy most (including some food for the lunches my children carry to school--they don't like sandwiches so I have to be creative):

Costco--carrots, string cheese, 1% milk (lowest I can go), granola (should make my own and sometimes do), pudding cups, individual juices, bread flour (I rarely buy bread), sugar, boneless chicken thighs. Steel-cut oats when available; Prego spaghetti sauce for times when I can't do from scratch (more frequent now that I'm teaching again). Real butter.

Local indie grocery (cheapest in town) and all depending on how low the price is--bell peppers, onions, potatoes, right now asparagus because it's on sale and my bed's not producing yet, tomatoes, bananas, oranges, apples, any other fruits that are a good buy, any good meat bargains besides beef (we bought a locally-grown half beef last fall but might buy bulk sausage for spaghetti sauce--a bit goes far--or ham, or bacon for BLTs, or pork roast when it meets my buy price). Cold cereal for our rushed mornings--we buy mostly the bagged kind because I don't buy unless it's under 12 cents an ounce. Graham crackers and peanut butter (my daughter's favorite snack). Sweet potatoes (red-fleshed)--my favorite lunch.

We buy wheat in bulk which I grind for bread.

Our dietary choices are equally influenced by price and health. If money were no object, there would be some differences that would reflect both taste and nutrition.

12:18--holy macaroni! I think it's great you make all of those things from scratch! All I kept thinking of was the story of the Little Red Hen..."who will help me grind the flour? who will help me bake the bread"! Good for you!
