Meal Replacement Bars

I work 2 jobs and was eating alot of fast food . I have been trying to avoid the drive thru. I usually have a yogurt, fruit or nuts to snack on . I have recently tried the South Beach Meal Replacement Bars . Very tasty! Unfortunately they make me sick , I end up with terrible gas pains almost doubling over. Anyone else ever experience this? Any other good tasting meals bars I could try or quick meal ideas?

meal replacement bars

i personally find those bars to be waisted calories. They have the same calories as a meal but you will be hungry after you eat it. Also its not a good idea to skip meals and eat those. Its not healthy at all. If you do wind up in the fast food line then so be it! Make a good choice. I find that when i am in a rush and have to eat fast food, I choose the salad that they have for a buck. Almost every fast food place has it. I also grab a grilled chicken sandwich with lettuce, tomato, onions and mustard. No mayo! I find that the meal replacement bars push me over my caloric intake. I tried them once and it took the hunger pains away only until i made it home and wound up eating again.

If you are eating a low carb meal replacement bar that has sugar alcohol instead of sugar, that could be causing the gas. Sugar alcohols definitely give me really bad gas - no pain, but lots of the rest.

I have this problem with any food replacement items like Slim Fast, protien shakes, etc. I thought it was just me but they make me really sick.

I think that it is the sweetener that is in it. I begins with an 'M'. I try to avoid it.

The other thing is that if the bars have high fiber (like the kashi bars, or KAshi Golean cereals), you need to CHEW THOROUGHLY... if you don't, you are not breaking down the grains enough and once they get into the intestines--the gas begins! Think of it like brewing beer.... Something has to cause the carbonation!

Try bringing an apple with you and munching on that-- however, again, you need to thoroughly chew it. I think most people (myself included) just gulp down foods (which is why we have problems with food!

I learned the hard way that I needed to chew those high fiber things more before eating!

I used to eat a lot of these types of bars and I am just sick to death of them, unless I'm desperate. For similar nutrients eat an ounce of nuts and a tablespoon of raisins, if you need to eat quickly on the go.
