Lynn, I did not hear from OP so I googled it. From what I read, it is basically the calories in minus calories burnt = wt loss/gained. It uses a lot of graphing and statistics tools which look at trend lines. There wasn't a lot of discussion regarding eating quality foods vs crap in the material I read. There was discussion regarding exercise and that it is important.

The hacker's diet is a system of graphing your weight (as implemented on trendweight.com or in the android app libra for example) that makes it really easy to tell if you're eating the right amount to hit your weight loss goals. For example, I currently am quite overweight and want to lose 2lb/week, and trendweight.com tells me:

You are losing 1.7 lbs/week of total weight.
You are burning 846 cal/day more than you eat.

You have been tracking your weight for 19 weeks.
You have 9.5 lbs to lose to reach your goal weight.
You will reach your goal around February 12, 2014.
You must cut 154 cal/day to match your plan.

Knowing that I'm 154 kcals/day over makes it a lot easier to resist that "low calorie" 100 calorie treat, since that's what's holding me back from my objective.

A lot of people refer to the hacker's diet as a "calorie counting diet" but I don't think that's accurate. If you eat a reasonably consistent intake daily you don't need to count anything, you can focus entirely on your deficit - the difference between your output and input - without knowing the exact numbers for either. Focusing on the deficit helped me realize that 200 calories was a _lot_ of calories, which it never seemed to be against a basic plan of eating say 1800 kcals per day.

Also, the graph provides instant feedback on yesterday's results, which is great. It helps motivate me to stick to my plans, and only gives me negative feedback when it's really obvious to me what I did wrong the day before.
