This isn't a diet question but is a health question!

My hair and my nails are very weak and break easily. Any suggestions on foods or specific vitamins that help with this? What about to make them grow?

Do you eat enough protein? I remember reading years ago that hair and nails are mostly protein and Jell-O or any kind of gelatin consists mostly of protein. Adding it to your diet will help support the creation of shiny strong hair and nails.

This actually works, I used to do it. You take plain gelatin and mis it accordingly and you can soak your nails in it for 15 - 20 min, do it while watching tv or something. When your done scrape off as much gelatin as possible and then massage it into your scalp. Make sure it gets in there really well and leave it on for 20 min. I used to do this 3X a week and it helped a lot. I also took prenatal vitamins. Folic acid is good too.

I have actually heard that gelatin trick before. I guess I will just have to try it. Today I also learned that vitamin E helps too and your skin as well. Thank you again.

I've read that the veterinarian world has had great success increasing the strength of horse and cattle hooves by feeding biotin, which is a nutrient in many multivitamins or can be bought as a stand-alone nutrient in many health food stores. I know we're not horses, but hey, it may be worth a try!

Thank you everyone. About the horse idea my grandmother told me to start washing my hair with horse shampoo and I can get it at Wal-mart. I also think I will add more protein in my diet and a multvitamin. Thank you all for the wonderful ideas.

Don't forget your EFAs

Essential fatty acids. Sometimes hair and nails become weak from lack of protein or lack of fat (healthy fats that is). Are you losing more hair than normal in the shower? EFAs are good for you for a whole heap of reasons, nevermind that by taking them you will also eliminate PMS and improve your mood. A mix of fish/borage/flax seed oils would be a good start.
