Who has lost weight walking for cardio?

I've started to walk on the treadmill for my cardio. I usually run, but as I get older my body is protesting. I know what my target heart rate should be so I'm able to acheive that walking at 3.3 speed and 10% incline for 30min. 3-4 days a week.

I think I just want some reasurance that I'm still doing what I should be doing even though my body isn't hurting everytime I do it.

Thanks for your help!

I would love to know too! I used to do 3 miles in 33 miles 5-7 times a week on the treadmill. I am much slower now but hope it is helping.

I walk 3 mornings/week but I also swim once a week, Pilates once a week, and more intense cardio 2 or 3 times/week. I don't think sticking to the same schedule will work for long. Maybe some days you could walk longer even if you have to slow down or lower the incline. Or add intervals where you speed it up for a minute or two and then recover at your normal rate.

Walking is great but I'm not sure you'll see great results with your current program.

Losing weight is about burning more calories than you consume. So you can lose weight with walking - you just won't burn as many calories walking as if you were doing a more intense workout so you need to walk for longer periods of time to burn more calories

I think the results you'll see are very much based on your current level of fitness. If you are very overweight and have been inactive for a long time, you'll probably see weight come off pretty quickly (assuming your eating is ok). But if you are close to your target weight and have been active for a while (which is what it sounds like), you are less likely to see results.

Remember, it doesn't matter how you travel the mile, at all but the very fastest speeds, you burn the same amount of calories. So if you used to run 3 miles in 30 minutes 4 days a week, and now you're only walking 1.5 miles in 30 minutes 4 days a week, you'll actually be burning only half as many calories. You'll have to increase the intensity (which you probably don't want to do since your heart rate is in your target zone) or increase the time that you walk each day.

I completely agree with the above poster. Depends on your fitness level. Walking is the easiest thing to do at any time so even if you're not losing a great deal of health, it's still a perfect habit. Living in DC, I walk to and from the grocery, etc and I know it's a reason that I only need to lose 10 pounds vs. 20.
