The Mean page: why women obsess....thanks media!

I'm so annoyed right now. I was searching online for an ideal weight calculator... first of all Dr. Koops ridiculous calculator says I am at 108 pounds ( I'm 5'1 , and just 3 pounds from my goal weight!) overweight! AND THEN... I stumbled apon a website which told me that women have an ideal weight range but men dont...uh by whos standards?? why should women have to struggle to stay within their supposed weight range but men eh they can just be whatever size they wanna be. alright yes men have more muscle to take into account, but I've got some muscles and none of these calculators even asked me about them! How is it that stupid ads, commercials, websites etc can turn my old confidence about my weight loss success into a new obsession to be 97 pounds, the weight dr.Koop says I should be. Will we ever be able to be satisfied with ourselves if we continue to be influenced by the media...and is it possible to be uninfluenced? I dont think botticelli would have agreed with Koop's standards, and all his famous nudes were gorgeous....If only we were flooded with those images everyday instead of airbrushed women on the covers of magazines. I say all this but still dr. koop has gotten to me and the new goal is 97 pounds. I just wanna be happy and content with my body, but everyday the media comes up with something new for us to hate. hell 5 years ago no one even knew what cellulite was...what will they pick on us for next our belly button size? grrrr

This is so interesting. I don't even buy 1/2 the magazines anymore for this reason. I hope my daughter doesn't feel the same kind of pressure as she gets older, that I give her a sense of confidence and the media pendulum swings the other way.

I'm 5'1", not fat (I look hot naked!) but somewhat muscular and definitely curvy (D-cups!) and I weigh 123lbs right now. I don't think that I could possibly get to 108, so right there, congrats! But, at the same height as you, and far heavier, I'm still well within the 'normal' BMI range for our height! So wherever you're looking that says you're overweight, well, that's probably not a good place to look!! (FYI, 97lbs is the cut-off where someone our height becomes below-normal in the BMI scale, 132lbs is the cut-off where they become above-normal)
