Weight gain after beginning weight training program?

I have been working out with a trainer for about 2 months now - we do weight training twice a week. I've noticed that my appetite has just jumped through the roof and I've actually gained weight! I know that some will say it's muscle mass, but my clothes have gotten tighter too and I weigh more than I have in a long time. I've definitely increased my caloric intake b/c I'm hungry all the time! Has anyone noticed the same problem? How do you deal with it?

When I find that I'm constantly hungry, if I revisit my diet, I find that I'm not eating enough fats, and I am eating too many carbs. I could easily eat a jumbo bag of pretzels from the vending machine in the afternoon and be hungry 20 minutes later, b/c simple carbs are only empty calories and are not filling. Try doing somewhat of the "Zone" diet - 40% of your calories from carbs (preferably whole wheats, not simple), 30% from protein, and 30% from fat. Add some cheese or peanut butter or eggs or something to what you typically snack on, and cut out things like crackers and white bread, and you should be hungry a lot less, and therefore have to snack less, and the weight will come off. It may take a little while for your body to 'jump-start' though!

I would have to agree that eating too many carbs just lead to eating more carbs. If we can just see that we need more hydration and protein we will find out that we will feel full longer.

I agree with 9:03. I would also add that you still need to be doing cardio. While you will burn calories with weight lifting, it really isn't enough to offset the extra calories. Trust me, I work out really hard with a trainer, but with my heart rate monitor, I still burn more calories with cardio. If you build muscle, you will have a higher metabolism all the time, but you still need to make up the extra calories you are eating. Good luck. You are asking the right questions, so I know that you will succeed. It just takes time to find the right formula for you.
