Experts suggest that 3,000 mg would be a good target for healthy adults.

Sodium in diet

I believe I am correct in stating that the AMA now recommends a maximum of 2400 mg of salt per day for healthy individuals. For anyone with a history of hypertension, or for anyone over the age of 60? the maximum RDA is 1500 mg/day.

The human body requires approximately 500 mg per day for normal functioning. This, however, does not take into consideration sodium lost through perspiration. For people doing heavy labor or heavy exercise, the daily sodium requirements are a bit murky. I try to limit my own intake to 1500 mg per day, and find it quite difficult to do, quite frankly.

If you would like this information from a more authoritative source, you might try Google or another search engine of your choice, and look for "sodium daily requirements" or a similar descriptor.

Good luck.
