Neti Pot

Does anyone else use this? It is the most amazing tool for cleaning out your nasal passages, I am so totally hooked!
I finally talked my husband into using this and he no longer snores - gone! now I can hardly sleep, I am actually so use to his snoring after 7 years.

I saw this on Oprah and I'm going to order one online. This has been the worse allergy season and I don't want the expense & possible risk of elevated blood pressure from allergy meds.

It is so funny that you are mentioning this. I haven't heard of this before, until 2 weeks ago. Since then, I have not only heard of it, but seen 2 people use it. They insist it is amazing. I didn't realize it would help with snoring. Maybe I'll suggest it to my mom (although, at this point, she's probably completely addicted to Tylenol PM!)

I LOVE my neti pot. Been using it for a couple of years. Be careful the first time you use it. It should NOT fill up your sinuses but go in one nostril and out the other. Altho I have to admit that's exactly what it did the first time I used it (when recovering from a cold). I couldn't believe how clean the passages were. I think I hadn't been using those sinuses for YEARS! I sure filled a lot of kleenexes. Do not use the neti pot unless you can breathe at least a little through BOTH nostrils. There is another squeeze botttle thingy (sinusaid or something like that) that my ENT recommended since you can put the salt water up the nostril and out the other while your head is upright. Make sure you don't have too little or too much salt in the warm water. I bought the premeasured packets at first, and ended up finding that about half the packet in my pot (about 1 cup of warm tap water) felt the most comfortable. Enjoy having the open breathing passages! Great for allergies (altho I have not stopped the antihistamines...)

Ah, fond memories of the Six Feet Under episode where Ruth finds crazy old George's neti pot in her kitchen cupboard...

Walgreens carries the SInu-cleanse brand. I love mine, especially when I have a sinus infection.

SINU CLEANSE A MUST

I have used SINU CLEANSE from Walgreens for about 7 months now when the allergist told me i didn't have allergies, I went to the ENT and guess what--I have allergies that were causing sinus and ear congestion. Do it in the shower to save time. Even my 7 year old daughter uses it. It's homeopathic and very healthy!

modern neti

I have the NeilMed Sinus Rinse, purchased at Walgreen's. It serves the same function as a neti - cleaning out the nasal passages - but it looks less like a tea pot and more like a sports-top water bottle. I used to miss work for 2-3 days at at time about once a month in the fall-winter. I started doing saline rinses last year and missed only one day of work. OMG, it feels so good not to be congested!

I tried to get one at my local Whole Foods--2 weeks before the Oprah show they had tons, but after the Oprah show, not 1 on the shelf-- the manufacturer has been on backlog (wish I had bought stock in that company!)

So, I'm still waiting for 1 to come into the store...

I don't quite understand how it works - how do you do it w/o just getting that terrible water-up-the-nose feeling?? How far up does the water actually go? Do you taste salt afterwards?

I want to try it b/c I get very bad sinus headaches a lot, and the doc says there's not much to do about them except maybe spritzing Afrin, so it sounds like a Neti would work, but every time I think about getting one, I think about getting water up my nose in a swimming pool or something!

the key for me is to make sure you have enough salt (pure sea salt) if your water is bad use distilled water, and make sure it is warm water, I actually like mine pretty warm. It takes a few times to get use to it, at first it is not very comfortable, but the minute you are done and blow your nose you will know it was the right thing to do, I didn't realize how congested I was. Getting the angle right is the key, and breathe out of your mouth the whole time.

For how to use a neti pot:

There's a video at the link below that shows how to position it and tip your head. The guy in the video looks like he kind of jams it up his nose - it doesn't have to go in like that.

The relief afterwards is amazing if you have congestion or allergies. For comfort make sure you have the temperature right and the salt % not to strong.

Recently my doctor recommended Nasopure, a nasal irrigation system referred to as the modern neti. I have tried both the neti and Nasopure and have found Nasopure far superior. I dont have to bend and twist like the neti and Nasopure seems to give a much more effective flush because it uses self controlled pressure instead of gravity. The angled Nasopure bottle allows for you to stand straight up while using it. Also, the salt packets that come with the product is much cheaper and seems more effective than that of the neti. I use one salt packet for about a week in the shower with Nasopure while the neti uses atleast one packet per use. Their website www.nasopure.com is very informative too and compares different nose washes on the market.

Yes I am a big believer and having been convincing friends and family memebers to do so since I to saw it on Oprah. I am fortunate and do not suffer from allergies however my hubby and his family have them terribly..I actually tried it first as the guinee pig I will be honest I thought I nearly drowned myself the first time, need to hold head in proper positioning... but after a few tries bingo, just clear clean nasal passage...

gag gift

I actually bought one of these as a gag gift for my father last year. He gets a kick out of anything to do with farting, boogers, etc. But after getting a few laughs out of it, gave it to a friend who has had severe allergies and sinus congestion his whole life and he uses it every day now and swears by it. I never used to have allergies before last spring and as they seem to be getting worse, I'm thinking of actually trying one.

I guess "Don't mock it before you try it." is a good suggestion.

Thanks for the info! I've had severe congestion all my life and I've just learned to live with it. I went to the doctor a lot as a teenager to try to figure out the cause of it and get cleared up. They did a bunch of tests (including a CT scan) but they never figured out what was causing my congestion because I don't have allergies. I tried a bunch of prescription nasal sprays but they never had any effect so I just resigned myself to being a mouth breather.

I'll have to give this a try. I hope it works for me. :)

save your money... get some baking soda and salt. 1/4 tsp of each into the 8?oz pot. Like anything you will find your own ratio your nose likes best.

I get a real kick out of seeing some gross stuff come sliding out with the water and blowing my nose. I use washcloths because it is just so wasteful and messier using tissues. They get tossed in the washer right away.
If you are clogged up... Holding the warm water to your nostril from the neti pot will eventually help if you keep switching sides. If anything the warm salene water feels good.

Too funny

Okay, I have been meaning to do this for years. My allergies stay under control with the Immune products I use, but my ears are still popping from a plane ride I took a couple of weeks ago so I know there is congestion in there. Seeing this thread I started googling around and found this link. I'm still laughing, but I will find a Neti pot today and start irrigating to see if my ears get some relief :)

ps thanks to the PP for all the good info

I have been using the Neilmed sinus rinse (the plastic bottle) on and off for about a year. I find that when I really need it (like now when I have a cold) it makes my ears hurt. Should I not use it during a cold? I am affraid that I might cause an ear infection? any thoughts?

Okaaaaay, I guess I'll give it another try. It was just a little disconcerting for me to have something plunged up one nostril, while water was dripping out the other nostril - something not quite natural about that. I was nervously expecting years and years worth of slimy muck to come oozing out...had the vomit bucket ready to go - and nope, nothing. I guess I didn't do it right. But you guys have convinced me to give it another try.
