Snowshoes?

I walk a lot and am thinking about trying snowshoes this winter. Any tips about buying/using?

I'm not a super serious snowshoe-er (hmmm...not really sure what to call one who snowshoes...lol) but I HAVE done it many times with either my own or borrowed/rented shoes. There are a few different kinds. I've used aluminum, plastic and wood/"gut" snowshoes. From my experiences I would recommend the wood snowshoes (the "traditional" kind most people picture when thinking of snowshoes). The plastic ones were heavy. The wooden ones ARE a bit heavier than the more modern aluminum ones you can buy but I'm also a bit of a goof so I like using the same snowshoes that my grandparents used. That being said, it seems to be pretty hard to find the traditional kind so aluminum would be your best bet.

As for using them...well you've probably had some kind of "outdoor education" regarding winter (it's taught at all the elementary/middle schools I know of here in the colder parts of Canada, I'm assuming it's pretty much the same elsewhere) so you know about layering , frostbite warning signs, snow blindness and cold weather dangers. That's pretty much all you need to know when snowshoeing.

Good luck!!! It's really a lot of fun, I'm sure you'll love it!

We are getting 10 inches of snow today, so I think I may borrow a pair and give it a go. Thanks for all your info--it's very helpful!
