G.E.R.D. help

I've had GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) since I was 12 but have kept it under control with diet changes. When I'm pregnant I can't seem to prevent the reflux. I have eliminated many things that are said to agrivate reflux and exercise regularly but it doesn't seem to help. I have a prescription for meds that work great but don't like taking drugs when I am pregnant if I can help it. I take tums-like pills for minor heartburn occasionally but they make the prenatal constipation worse so i don't like taking them. Does anyone have any ideas to assist in reflux prevention? Thanks!

Well - there are the things your Dr has probably told you:

- Don't eat after 6
- Elevate the head of your bed 2-4"
- Exercise
- Avoid citrus, fats, mint, chocolate, caffine, alcohol, etc
- Eat a diet high in soluble fiber (absorbs excess acid better)
- Eat small meals 5-6 times a day

However, being pregnant with your child pressing up against your stomach is just going to cause some reflux. I uderstand not wanting to take medications, but you don't want irreparable damage to your esophagus either (look up 'Barret's Esophagus' - it's a pre-cancerous condition). This wouldn't be a concern for most folks, but since you've been struggling with this so long it's worthy of consideration.

Of course in the long term (once you've delivered) - maintaining a healthy weight and activity level are two of the best things you can do, but for some folks there is a surgical solution if that doesn't work (although it's not without risk). Genes play a role too, so it's not all about your lifestyle although lifestyle changes can help.

Best wishes - I'm sorry you find yourself in this spot.
