What would you bring to eat when flying all day...?

I'm trying to get ready for a business trip and need some inspiration for what to bring and eat while I'm on the plane or at the airport (as I'm expecting healthy options are going to be few and far between!).

I usually bring an empty water bottle (you can put this in your carry-on if it's completely dry and empty then fill it up once you're past security), fruit, dried fruit, trail mix, nuts, sandwiches, and my new favorite snack, Larabars (no sugar added dried fruit/nut bars).

I'd also suggest googling the airport (e.g. JFK airport) and their web site should have a list of restaurants/shops and their locations in the concourse. That way you can strategically plan ahead instead of being tempted by the smell of Cinnabon or the sight of Ben and Jerrys.

I agree with 12:40. I always bring an empty water bottle- otherwise I get dehydrated nad it is so expensive to buy once you are there.

I get whole-wheat mini bagels (100 cal each) and make sandwiches -- usually w/ a piece of swiss cheese, big slice of cucumber, & a big slice of tomato & some black pepper.

ziplock full of celery sticks (crunchy), sliced cukes (smell yummy), and baby carrots (sweet) keep me busy and fill me up before eating other stuff.
unsalted peanuts, dark chocolate, a big fat home made sandwich on whole grain bread fill me up for lunch and later snacks.
soy cheese and TLC whole grain crackers also make a great snack.

Lara Bars all the way- they save me from having to eat all the junk in airports and planes. BTW, someone could make a mint selling healthy snacks. If Starbucks found a way to sell a dairy and gluten free snack that would be so helpful.

This is the perfect time of year to buy clementines. You can pack several, they're easy to peel, and they're good :)

I've seen prepackaged hummus and veggie snacks that would be perfect for travel.

Pleas be kind to your fellow passengers and don't bring anything aromatic. Leave the clementines at home- they have a strong smell, they are really juicy, and that juice gets everywhere, and it's not like you've got a trash can handy to ditch the rinds...

Good luck!

Thanks for the brilliant suggestion of bringing empty water bottles! I fly a lot and hate having to spend a small fortune on bottled water but also hate getting dehydrated. What a great idea.

OP here - Thanks everyone for the great ideas!!! I'm going to hit the grocery store tonight and prep up a bunch!

I really like the idea of small sandwiches with just veggies or cheese. I'm more comfortable with cheese at room temp than sandwich meats!

And I've already got a stash of LaraBars!

Man, I just thought of taking soup along in a thermos, but I then I realized that isn't going to work... :-(

with the empty water bottles - it works great in the states, but I know in Mexico they make you throw it away before boarding. butI still brought it for the long wait before boarding

It's a clementine not a watermelon wedge for goodness sake! They're fine for travel . I love clementines for travel - I think they're a perfect snack b/c they're easy to carry, they're not messy, and they're easy to dispose of . Maybe the pp is thinking of something else - it's about the equivalent of eating a banana in terms of smell and packaging.

Lara Bars are fruit and nut bars. I love the ingredient list, usually no more than about 5 ingredients (example: dried apples, dates, almonds, cinnamon). They are gluten-free, vegan, and delicious!

The link below takes you to an old snack thread about non-perishable snacks (originally what to eat at your desk, but works very well for flying).

I also make sandwiches on lite whole wheat bread (80 cals for 2 slices) with things that won't go off - like carefully measured PB&J, sliced tomatoes and cheddar.

If you travel a lot, consider getting an insulated lunchbag and mini ice pack, or better yet, some of those next-generation tupperware containers with built-in ice packs and compartments to keep dressing separate from salad. There's another thread about those too - Mr Bento, I think it's called.

6:40 - now that's a very nice way of directing someone to a previously discussed topic. Thank you :)

I like bringing along a couple snacks of my own--never know when you'll be running late and not have time to buy something. But I also plan on treating myself with something light (I always regret buying unhealthy stuff because it leaves me so bloated). In addition, I try to pack light, so that I can walk around the airport before the plane takes off. So many airports have done great remodels, so there's a lot to look at and shop for, which is a great way to kill time and burn some serious calories.
